OT: Your own Propane tank?

Does anyone own their own propane tank?

I think that if you own your own tank the propane is cheaper cause you can shop around.......I just got 400 gallons and the total bill with delivery and tax is $837.....$1.99/gallon--Ouch.

out here in western kansas there is no option. either own your tank or go without. 1.30/gal

What does a tank cost? Is it a welded steel pig or are there plastic ones that dont rust? How many gallons and what type is yours.?

In my area, if you own your own tank, you can purchase propane from anybody. If you agree to get your propane from your supplier and your supplier ONLY, the tank is free.
I own a 1000 gallon tank and in my area it's about a dollar a gallon when purchasing a tank.

You are not going to find anything other than steel. To be certified the tank has to have a safe working pressure of 250 PSI and a test pressure without deforming of four time that amount, 1000 PSI.

I have my own here in Indiana, a 600 Gal I bought at an auction, that allows me to purchase from any suppliers and cheaper as its my own tank, my Summer fill was around 1.29 and I paid advance for the winter lock in price....... I remember when I bought mine I loaded it on my flat bed trailer n drug it home while people (bleeding heart Liberals mostly) were screaming and crying I needed all sort of permits and/or it was illegal to transport it myself..

I own my own tank, St. Louis area. Just had it filled at $1.25 a gallon, Contracted 1000 gallons pre paid for $1.35 a gallon. Cost of new tank, $ 900.00. I have a 500 gallon tank.

I own my tank....pre-bought 1000 gals last month for the shop @ $1.19. I'm told that owning my own tank saves me .10 per gal, but who knows for sure? From what I understand, leasing/using a companies tank constitutes a marriage to them. I'm unsure if it is illegal to fill another companies tank or if there is just some unwritten rule that it simply isn't done. I've heard stories both ways. Tanks used to run $1.00 per gallon arond here, but lately I've seen them advertised more in the $1.59 range.

I own my tank because I got it at a good price. Some things to consider are;How long would it take to pay for a tank at the amount you will save? Does the company that owns the tank service it for free or are you responsible for repairs. Remember to add the price of a regulator in the cost of a tank. Some people just like the idea of owning their own tank in that case the cost doesn't matter as much.
Good luck
Frank

Yep, around here (Central Ohio) I found the propane can be 40-50 cents a gallon cheaper if you own your tank as opposed to the rental tank price. Always felt like I was being robbed by them!

I bought my own 1000 gallon tank $2250 about two years ago and figure it will pay for itself in about 4000 gallons, thats about 3 and a half years at the rate we use it.

How many can you get me for a dollar a gallon?

Maybe 15 years ago but now they are closer to $2.00.

Our Coop buys to lease out or sale by the semi load. (15 to 17 tanks at a time)

Because of insurance and liability reasons company A will not fill company B's tank in this area.

If you own your tank you may have to pay for a pressure check every few years. When leasing this is included in the lease price.

We had a big explosion here in SE Iowa a few years back and the supplier got sued big time even though he did not install or own the tank.

Rules of insurance got changed after that here in Iowa.

We had a rash of 250 - 300 gallon tanks stolen last year. I beleve that they were being turned into smokers. You can buy a used one in the state market bulletin for $250.

You got ripped!!! I just got my 1000 gallon tanked filled. 767 gallons + tax = $905.00 $1.16 a gallon off the truck.... no contract! I own the tank.

Today 99 cents a gal. and a 500 gal tank 625.00 and tank is USA made not a Mexico. just called friend that delivers LP for prices

To the best of my knowledge the larger tanks are all steel.

For the smaller tanks and bottle they are generally steel but can also be aluminum.

On the bottle market now are tanks that I believe are fiberglass. The are non-metalic at least.

I own my tank. Dad bought it new in the 1960s when he bought a new MM G705. We gave it to my brother after dad died as he was going to take over the family farm. Died less than a year later and I bought it at his auction. A 500 gallon tank half full and I paid around $325 for it and the fuel. Difficult to move as I don't have a tractor larger than a compact for unloading it. With difficulty I did get it done.

Just paid $51.00 plus tax yearly tank rental on a 250 gallon tank. As Marv in GA said used ones are around $1.00 per gallon. Gonna keep a lookout for me one. David................

gun guru, My family has always owned our own tank. I have followed suit also! I own 2 tanks both are standard 300 gallon tank. As the others have said and I echo the same you are NOT beholding to any LP company to buy their LP gas so you can shop for the best price around.
But You will do ALL maintance on the tank, and pay for it out of your pocket! So having a good working relationship with some LP gas co is important when you need parts and service.
Yes most companies get a little twisted if you are completely bone dry, when you get refilled, There is a surcharge to check out your home to make sure you don't blow your self up relighting any pilot lights! Usually that surcharge comes into play at less than 10 or 15 %.
In my home LP is only used for heat and and the cook stove, and a fire starter in my fireplace. Again this is where a good working relationship is necessary My local Co doesn't say much about it when I refill in the fall.
Hope this helps.

PS, I have my second tank of aux use,,, Tractor fuel, BBQ grill tank , Oxygen/LP cutting instead of Accetelene. This tank has a wet line set up to fill bottles and tanks at My leasure! Later!!!

in our county there were two gas companies that always took people for a ride but didn't charge a yearly fee for a tank. another company bought them out a couple of years ago and started charging a rental fee on tanks, a 6.00 fee for sending a bill, and their customer service went to nothing. they thought they would have a monopoly, but people started buying their own tanks and a couple of other companies opened branches. their yards are full of tanks people have told them to come and get (me included) and now the slogan on their sign is "relationships matter" but you can't find anyone who will still deal with them. my uncle really p!ssed them off by telling them if he is renting the tank he'll get whoever he wants to fill it up.

One thing I forgot. Make sure if you buy a propane tank it has a good data plate. It isn't legaly a propane tank witout one.

I own two 500 gal tanks. First one cost $250 years ago and was half full.
Second on cost $400 and also had some propane in it.
I only fill up once a year, no contacts to worry about. $1.25/gal this year.

Here in West Kentucky I purchased my own tank. In 2004 I give $800.00 for the tank, regulator, and installation. New (500)gal. Our company UPG gives you an introductory price on 1000 gal. of propane when you purchase your new tank. At that time I paid .69/gal. I could'nt use the 1000 gal in the one year time frame but managed to get about 800 of it.

I can generally heat my house at 71° for an entire winter on a 500 Gal tk which will really only hold 400 gal. due to the 80% rule.
