I don't know much about these transmissions but now need to learn quickly! I have one in a 85 chevy 1/2 ton 4x4.I aquired this truck from my step son who passed away. I knew the rearend was bad and went through that completly also adding a new posi unit. When I took it for a test drive it shifted from 1st to 2nd to 3rd then it dropped back into 1st and didn't want to shift again. What year 700r4 will interchange with this? Are they durable. Running behind a warmed over 454 with 4 barrel. Let me know. Thanks, Dave

get one in the later 80's as the 85 were not a very good year for that trans. one out of any 700r4 would work as long as it is 4x4 they went electronic so as long as you find one with the detent cable you should be fine not sure what year they went elec. You can get that one upgraded and rebuilt to hold up to that engine but the price goes up the more upgrades you do. I think a basic build can be had for around $700 if you R&I yourself

Have you looked at having the original problem fixed? Might be something simple. A lot of problems can be fixed without pulling the trans.

just replaced 1 two weeks ago trans shop wanted 1900to rebuild with 1 yr 12000mile waranty i bought used 1 for 350 with 90 day waranty look around used prices where 300-800 cant belive miles they tell you if its already out

Dave,

That just isn't gonna work. That transmission was never designed for that kind of torque.

That's why GM always used a 400 or a 4L80 behind the 454.

I think yer gonna pull right thru that little guy if you stay with the light model transmission.

Check gear on the end of the governor,,, I spec its worn out,, its a EZ check pop the cap and pull the gov out. If its chewed up try a new gear are replace the gov assy,,, depends on the condition of the gov.

Personally I would not rebuild a early 700,,, it can B done successfully but takes a guy that kept up with the updates,,, a kit can B brought to convert to a 350/400 reasonable.

I had a bud that could make the early 700 dependable but he is no longer with us,,, check that gov gear[/url]

I gotta put in a plug for Allan on this one.
During the mid 80s, (I think it was the era) Chevy came out with the 454SS pickup. Yep, it had the 454 engine in it. Guess what. They never put the 700R4 behind this engine. The reason they didn"t it because GM didn"t want to have to warranty the truck. You could very easily put a 700R4 in it, but you had to baby the truck and if you had the 454, who wants to do that?
If you put a 700R4 behind that engine, you better have beefed it up a little bit.
