which bottom plow to use

I have a MF135 diesel tractor, which bottom plow would be best for it? I have great soil realy rich no clay. I want to turn the grass over and let it rot then chop it with choppers in the spring. So would it pull (2) 14" (1) 16" Or (3) 12" . Would it pull 7' Chopper disk Thanks.

How deep are you wanting to plow? Rule of thumb for plows is 1/2 the width for depth of cut to work best unless you have a deep tillage bottom then it is 2/3 the width of cut. 12" = 6" deep, 14" = 7" deep, 16" = 8" deep, unless deep tillage bottom then a 16" = 12" deep and a 14" slightly less than 10" deep. Power you should be able to pull any of them.

Should pull two 14s or 16s. If you don't have any ballast in the rear tires, forget plowing.

I've got a Massey Ferguson 150 diesel, which is the same drivetrain as a 135, just a heavier front end, slightly longer wheelbase, and a few more bells and whistles. Also has a few hundred more lbs. IMHO, the 150 handles a plow just a little better than a 135 due to the weight and wheelbase.

It toys with a 2X14" MF #66 plow. I've had 3X12"'s behind it and it did just fine, but I like the 14" plows better. At one time I had a 2X16" Ford 101 plow. The 150 handled it just about the same as the 2X14"'s. We have decent soil here, some clay, top soil about 14" deep. I plow around 8" to 9" deep with the 14"'s. (They have coverboards. That seems to make quite a difference)

Oh...also, I pull a 7-1/2' MF #25 3ph disc OR a #350 IH 8' wheel disc with the same tractor. The wheel disc makes it grunt. (much heavier than the 3ph disc) The 7-1/2' 3ph disc is about a perfect match.

That is a 38HP tractor so it should handle a 2-14 easy and might do well with a 2-16 if the soil is as good as you said. I use a 2-16 behind my Ford 841 which is a tad bigger at 45HP and it makes it bark but I also have clay for the most part

I plowed for ten years with my MF-135 and 2x16s (Case plow) at 4 to 5 mph. The old tires had ballast. One split and doused the tractor with calcium chloride, rusted instantly. The new tires have no ballast, but pulled the plow better than the old ballasted ones. Sharp corners on the lugs helped a whole lot.

Central Iowa soil types Nicolette/Webster/Clarion.

2/14's or 2/16's would be my choice. Also, it should handle the 7' chopper fine. I'd personally go with 2/14's as I do with my 861 Ford but we do have clay ground. I also have a 35 MF and it struggles to pull 2/14's in our soil like I want it to be plowed.

Thanks for all the reply's I can ge a sweet deal on (2) 14". This land had cows on it for about 40 years natural fertilizer.

Your MF135 was tested at 33HP. So it will pull any of the plows you list. It'll also pull a 7' disk okay, though you may be light on the front end when turning.

The picture is of Al Hoyt pulling a 3-12" at Jordan, MN at the FENA expo back in 2005.

I agree; should pull the implements listed......in most soils. Dad bought a '30' in 1954; dealer convinced him it would pull the three 12s he had on the lot; it did to a degree; it was 'my' tractor when I was about 10--14 years old and was a bucking son-of-a-gun and it wasn't unusual to plow from one end of the field to the other with one or both front wheels in the air. Later had a '35' and a '50', both pulling three 14s; the '30' was geared a little different and I'd get lapped every once and a while.

I think your next question on the sweet deal or will it be a run the other way for your life thing is what make and model plow is it. If it is not a popular model or blacksmith sharpen share or missing coulters or no tail wheel then it is a run for your life plow, not a sweet deal.
