O/T Transmission flush (redblood)

Hello,

Redblood posted about flushing automatic transmissions.

Q) '02 Chevy 2WD w/5.3 V-8. 100,000 miles. I had the trans flushed several times in the past 7 years and would like to do it again. Called the dealer and asked about it. They wanted to include an additive, [u:0c10d64562]before and after[/u:0c10d64562] the 'flush'.

When asked why, the response was, "it's recommended by GM for high mileage transmissions, It's to lubricate and soften the seals and re-rejuvenate the transmission".

The trans works great and there are no leaks.

Your opinion on this please.....thanks sl
 
its a addative that the company that sell's the machine sells them. its how they pay for the machine. ask what type of fuild they are using. dextron 6 does not need any thing added and should not get any thing added. david
 
My flush machine is a BG brand machine.

They also off a chemical for before (cleaner) and after(conditioner).
I have a 1979 chevy 4x4 with a 454 big block and a turbo 350 trans. I plow snow, Haul hay, has a dump box in the bed, hauls whatever I need. The truck empty weighs 7200#.

The biggest problem is when you combine a small block rated transmission and big block power. The transmission loses. As such approx. every 2-3 years I had to replace the transmission.

Since I started flushing my trans, Which I thought was BS, I have not changed a transmission yet. I have flushed it straight with fluid, and then used the chemical after the first flush and flushed it again.
I flush my trans once in the spring and once in the fall.

The machine has a sight tube on it so you can see the fluid. After first flush it was now red, after the second flush, with the chemical, it was bright red.

The chemical helped clean it. I do NOT reccomend a transmission with 200,000 miles with minimal or no maintenance be chemical flushed. I would not do it to my own or some one elses.

IF the transmission has been regularly maintained and flushed every 50,000 miles. Then yes by all means it will not hurt it. Does it help? In my opinion yes. Do some people say no. yes It is all up to you and your automotive technicians discretion.*sp*

My wifes 98 Mercury began to shudder on upshifts.Called a Ford dealer,he said bring it in.Took 1 hour.A friction modifier is added to the transmission along with all new fluid.The hudder stopped.Car had 180000 on it.Many posts on forums are an involentary release of ignorance.
 
While it's not a bad idea, it's not really necessary as long as you service the trans as recommended. I work in a transmission parts warehouse, and we sell hundreds of bottles of additive, both the Smart Blend and Lubegard products. Our shop mechanics put it in many vehicles, but not all of them. It mainly has friction modifiers and heat stabilizers, and in a high mileage tranny it may be a good idea. There's nothing in the two brands we carry to "swell the seals". That idea died out years ago when lip seals used to harden up and crack with heat and age. The rubber compounds and lip seal styles they use in any trannys after the mid to late 80's did away with the need for that stuff. For fords you can buy the friction modifier and put it in about 5 minutes. Lasts year or so. About 20 bucks here. Will stop shudder ASAP.
