Well last Saturday we had 2 inches of rain here in NY. Wedensday we got 1 1/2 inch, and more is coming tomarrow. What a muddy mess, and Im on clay too. Most guys around here were chopping corn 2-3 weeks ago,,, there lucky they did.
Well I 'll be glad to take some snow from Allen in NE. LOL J

The whole month of October has been rainy for us. Approximately 18 inches at the farm for Oct.

First time either of us can remember that water went over the dam at the pond (happened at least twice this month). First time ever the highway leading to the farm was closed due to high water.

Rain finally stopped this morning and there's no more predicted in the 10 day extended forecast. Maybe now we can dry out a bit.

I don't know about you,but I'm getting the shakes. I was about to post and ask if anybody wants to buy a farm. I dumped 2.4 out of the rain guage the other day, there's 1.75 in it right now and it's still coming down in buckets. Just looked at the radar, looks like it's gonna keep up all day. Water standing everywhere. Corn's got too much moisture to be picking anything anyway. Cattle are slogging around in the slop, restless, getting into everything they shouldn't. Not the worst fall that I've ever seen...yet,but that doesn't make it any easier to take. What a damndable mess!

Ya, the whole summer/fall has been a mess over here. I just as soon forget about 2009 for ever... We broke a record in July from 1872 with 9 inches of rainfall, maybe not alot for other areas, but alot for us in NY.
Each year we have been getting higher than normal rainfall. Last drought was in 2003, So whats in store for 2010, maybe I'll have to start 1st cutting in September. j

I read an article in The Old Farmers Almanac 12 years ago that said because of the regular pulsing of the sun,it was getting colder. As a result, since water cools slower than land or air,the moisture that evaporated from the warm water would condense because of the cooler air and cause at least 20 years of cold wet springs. Seems like it's been affecting the fall a lot more lately too. Of course the end result will be a colder climate all together once the waters cool. That first cutting in September thing might be a joke now,but only getting one cutting and taking it in August might be what's coming in a few short years. I'm starting to think that in my lifetime,we won't be growing corn at all north of tha Mason/Dixon line. It's getting to be a serious situation.

Agreed. But that first cutting in August is already here. None of us ever really got into the hay this season until August 15th.. I used to cut June 15th... Who knows what lies ahead. J

That's for sure. I finished first in mid July. Took the second in September. Chopped a little bit of third this month and fed it green, but it didn't do the fields any good being out there on wet ground.

I dont know were you are, but Id take that first in mid July after what we had. I only do about 2200 first cut small squares, but it was raining every other day here, started in Augest.
My father in law green chops his fields after first cut with a flail chopper into a self unloading wagon, hay not quite ready for second cut, then feeds it to his cows on pasture. Ha, not this fall, with the fields being so wet.! Really, we have 2 inches of water on the fields in some places. I"II be glad when it FREEZES. LOL JayinNY
