searching for a decent crawler

It has been MANY MANY years since I had a crawler loader, Had a J.D.420 /with High lift bucket. Sold it because of lymes, and couldn't get up on it any more. Now my son is interested in a crawler loader to clean off a secondary drain field, and a building site to store our tractor, bobcat etc..Looking for a gas engine and decent final drives, trans, pins & rollers. I spent over $600.00 on 1st gear and an additional $1,500.00 on final drives,Clutches seals and bearings on the 420 so we don't want to get into that for a while. Money is in SHORT SUPPLY any suggestions or input on what to look for would be appreciated.Been looking on this forum and craigs list,Any other forum we should be looking at? Thanks for your time.

Have him rent what he needs. I've not seen anything much under 8K that didnt need some help unless its on the west coast or in western Canada.

I have a 1988 Komatsu D-41S with 3969 hrs on it. It has a 4in1 bucket (clam bucket) undercarriage is 50% over all remaining (just had the pins turned and put new spockets on). Nothing wrong with it other than it has a minor hydraulic weep at the hand control valve. It runs and operates like a new machine. A couple reasons I'm selling it are, my health isn't the best and I don't plan on trying to find anymore work for it, plus work here has slowed down anyhow. I've owned it for about 12 years. I've torn down several houses, clear and graded some lots, cut roads up through the woods, did a job with a 20 foot cut and fill that was roughly 160ft by 300ft, etc. etc. It's a sweet machine. It weighs 12 to 13 tons. I want $16,000 for it. Let me know if your interested.

Lou,
Tractorhouse always seems to have their prices HIGH. But hey, selling price vs. asking price may be way different? Craigslist has as many crawler/dozers listed as ebay without the high reserve/buy it now prices.

I assume you are looking for something way bigger than a 420? If not, why not put a set of tracks on the bobcat you already have? That would surely save some $$$, plus you won't have another piece of machinery to maintain.

If you're looking for a crawler way bigger than your bobcat, nevermind my idea about tracks.

Good luck.

If money is in SHORT SUPPLY, why would you be looking for a crawler? Just about every repair on a crawler is expensive. If you happen to fnd a crawler for cheap, you can expect it's going to need repairs. What kind of bobcat and tractor do you have? Why can't they be used? Dave

Thanks Dave for your reply. What we have is 706.H. and a 722 bobcat, There are quite a few trees and stumps that gotta be pushed. Don"t want to over burden both pieces of equiptment if at all possible. Not looking for a huge crawler something in the line of a small case, oliver, or another J.d .I do expect to have repairs (engine problems would be O.K.) on an older one, so that would be a winters project. Been thinking of a gas 440 or a 350 J.d. What do you think my chances are, Slim to none? Sure hope not. will keep looking on different sites as listed on the other post, Thanks . LOU

Thanks to you also. I should have done the work when I had T.D 18 . Sold it now I wish I had it back. Would make short work of what we need.
Hoping to find one with engine problems rather than Final drives, that would make us a winters project. Gotta keep looking,Didn't think of tractor house, So now I know, I'll see what is available there. Thanks a lot.

Wish I could afford it, but can't. Sounds like some one would be glad to own it at your asking price. Well with in reason although it would be way to big for what I need. Looking for one thats close by and we could haul it on our equiptment trailer. I keep hoping. Thanks for the reply

Probably right. Having some one do the work is like pulling hens teeth. I dont go for a mouth full of gimmie and a hand full of much obligued. Had work to be done several years ago, and local excavators promised to show up for estimate. Didn't happen so I bought a TD 18 and did it myself. Things havn't changed much around here. The work I need done wouldn't take more then 6 hrs total. I know that there is a great deal of expense in loading, hauling, and working a piece of equiptment,Maby they wanted 2 days work or more, rather then small potatoes. who knows. Any way it would be nice to have a small machine available when needed. I just don't want to make a crawler/dozer out of our 706 /722 bobcat.
Sure hoping I'm not chasing a will-o-the whisp.
Thanks for your reply, Gonna keep looking for something close by and in need of engine work.

Your not going to push many trees with a 440.Maybe a 3 inch saplin.A backhoe will work a lot better on trees than small dozer.I just sold a nice 440 and bought a 450 case. It's twice the machine.but not much on trees.I dig down about 3ft around the tress with the backhoe and shove it over with the dozer.Probably cheaper to hire it done and deduct it from your taxes.

Even the small ones are expensive to fix. I don't know your budget but if you find one and have a mechanic check it out, there is still no guarantee that it won't need expensive repairs. You might be better off renting or hiring a machine to clear the tree's and stumps. Google machinery trader for machines and prices. Dave
