sparks out of exhaust

Hey folks, been running my little tractor quite a bit and working it pretty hard after the repair (Excessive oil consumption thread). Doing much better, but was running it pretty good this evening and sparks were coming out of the stack (quite a bit). Is that normal for a diesel motor? I slowed it down and was OK. Runs fine though and doesn't smoke as much at startup or use as much oil. Hardly any in the last 2 days. Still going to change to the 15/40 diesel oil as recommended, just haven't got to it.

Thanks,

Dave

exhaust is probaly pretty well sooted up from excess oil...sparks are more n likely just carbon...i wouldnt worry too much just yet...keep an eye on temp and oil...it should quit throwin sparks as engine rings seat.

Diesel exhaust is hot. Not too uncommon to see sparks. Maybe your exhaust is hotter after having a rebuild job and is burning some carbon.

Sparks out of the exhaust pipe can be dangerous. One year in the springtime, I set a field of corn stalks on fire from sparks out of the exhaust pipe when I went out to disk the field. The tractor hadn't been used much over winter and carbon had built up in the pipe. Then I went out and worked the tractor hard. Conditions were apparently just right...dry and windy.

Running the Perkins A4-318 at night is a very impressive thing. There is allot of sparks. You tend to see more when the engine is not under load. This is common and normal. Its simply carbon burning off and exiting the engine. You can get a spark arresting muffler which will solve problems in locations that can ignite easily.

Years ago, I'm thinking it was in the late 60's I was out disking after dark when I saw what I thought was sparks shooting up a couple of hundred feet ahead of me. Then I saw them again only in a different spot. As I got closer I could barely see the shape of my neighbor's DC Case without lights across the fence pulling a plow. He's long gone now but thankfully his family saved the Case and it's safely stored away. Jim

Yep - years ago when I worked the DC harder in the fields it was real pretty at nite, sparks out the pipe and cherry red manifold.

Thanks folks! It was when it was under no real stress, didn't notice it when going up hill. As far as the smoke and oil use, it's almost back to normal.

That is the reason they should be fitted with a spark arrestor. I gunned my fordson the other night and the same happened, when I backed off there was no evidence of sparks.I was on the edge of a wheat crop, could have been serious.
