WIRELESS ENGINE CONTROLS

Does anyone know of source for wireless oil pressure and temperature guages? I need to monotor from a remote location and long wireing is not an option. I guess i'm not sure such an animal even exist.

I dunno, they do it with the space shuttle!

Seriously, my son is developing a system that they can monitor the performance of engines in their machines around the world. Surprisingly the first guys to sign up were the landfills, they also have a couple of systems on railroad engines. The system uses cell phone signals and GPS. If their is an ECM problem he can fix it from his desk. Not cheap, I think he is talking in the $8,000 to $10,000 range per machine. Of course it will get cheaper when they have more machines on it.

there's a bunch of oilfield pumping stations that went wireless awhile back...put quite a few gaugers out of work.

It would help if you gave a little more information: How far away is the engine from the monitoring location? What do you have to work with? For example, is there already some sort of data link (e.g. phone line) in place?

As others posted, Murphy switches are your best bet if you just want to make sure the unit shuts down before it self-destructs.

Was hoping for something simple.Only going from the engine to the rear of the truck (well drilling rig). I can run wiring but thought if there was a simple wireless option it would be worth a try.

For only two gauges, I think running wires would be your simplest and cheapest solution. Of course wireless transmitter/receiver setups are used for a number of applications: home weather stations and tire pressure monitoring are a couple of examples. These things are cheap because they're able to build them in huge volumes. I don't know of any cheap general-purpose solutions.

Googling "remote monitoring" will give you some ideas.

Running a simple neat tidy multi conductor cable to the back of the rig is dead simple and cheap. A volt meter, oil pressure, fuel level and temp gauge won't be affected by cable length.

If you can find an old wrecked fire pumper truck. Every little thing you need for the dash instruments, remote indication already mounted, wiring harness and senders are all there.
