Could you fellas with experience on the Deere 2440 please provide your opinions.

There's one for sale that has a mod.145 loader with 2600 hours on it. The seller wishes $7500.

I'm looking to brush hog five acres and my SCUT is just too small for the chore. The filds have been worked by big tractors decades ago and the rut paths are plentiful.

Opinions please on the machine and the price ?

Trying to rememeber if that one was a Manhiem tractor or made in USA. Either the 2440 or 2640 was the only one in that series that was American made if I rememeber right. The older 1020,1520 and 2020 were super nice reliable tractors. If the 2440 could hold a candle to them, you couldn't go wrong.

If taken care off great.
If abused or if non JD oil was dumped into the trans/hydraulics. Or if the coolant never was changed or never had the corrosion inhibitor re-freshed. There could be repair bills in the future.

neighbor has one uses it all the time I've ran it several times nice little tractor ,don't think you could go wrong for that price,if its in good shape.good luck

Is using Deere fluids in Deere equipment critical? Is it better to seek out other manufacturers that are less sensitive to oil types when looking for used equipment?

ANY make of tractor using wet brakes needs a hydraulic/transmission oil that's compatible with wet brakes. NO big deal, except some folks are too ignorant/cheap/lazy to use the correct (typically UTF) oil.

Yes. I've got one. Great tractor. I've got about 6000 hrs. on it. Only thing I've done is put clutch in it witch is odd because I never had a loader on it. Use mine to run auger, Mow, rake and bale hay. About 10,000 bales/yr. It is parked in the winter.

rrlund, I can"t help him much but my book shows the 2440 had the same 219ci engine as the 2520 diesel if that helps in where it was made. Wasn"t one of those 40 series tractors offered in a shuttle shift? My book doesn"t show that, I loved that feature sure made manure loading go smoother if that"s possible.

Sarg - My 2240 (pre tiger stripe) has been a great machine. I run a 717 (7ft... it handles it very well) JD brush mower with it. The power steering is great (one finger). The two speed power shift is great for mowing. The low mount exhaust is great around the woods. The fully independent PTO is nice. I don't think I'd like my machine much as a serious loader tractor (swept back axle & two wheel drive would not provide much traction, and the forward to reverse ratio/speed changes can be a bit interesting).

Good luck. You'll get 5 acres done in no time! Steve

Oh. Forgot to mention I do all the planting with mine too. 6 rn and 13 ft drill. I throw some duals on the 15-5-38s and it pulls it real nice.

I have one, 1981 diesel. That is a good price for one with a loader. Mine is a sweet tractor but has been expensive to own. Twice it has been split to repair internal oil leaks in the rear end when pipes broke. Front hyd. pump went out too. Engine dropped an o-ring and that was $6000 by the time it was running as the crankshaft was cracked. Mine has hi/lo and works well. Shuttle shift is $10,000 to repair if it has that I was warned. I use it on a shredder, augers, etc. but when I tried it on a 4 bottom plow on a hot day it wanted to overheat right away, at least on the gauge. Had plenty of power at 60hp but I did not push my luck. Maybe my cheapo replactment radiator is not as good as JD.

Mine has just over 4,000 hours and has not been abused and had regular maint. Like my buddy says, if it has +its or tires, it will cost you money!

I think there's more to the story, the tractor without the loader would bring that. That's very low hours for a tractor that old.I'd like to see some pictures.

It happens with every brand of equipment that uses wet clutches and wet brakes. Some illiterate cheapskate will dump in the lowest priced hydraulic oil they can find.Or worse yet sae 90wt gear oil.
Hy-Gard for Deere and High-Trans for CIH
Lacking high pressure anti-wear additives and friction modifiers. Gear/bearing wear is accelerates and the clutch/brake friction material crumbles off it's steel backing plates.
The trans screen and trans filter should be inspected. If the screen/filter are loaded or 100% clean. There is trouble.

sarg, there are some things to ponder here one being there is no doubt a lot of deals out there in fact I've been looking at some options myself for sometime but once being in the farm equipment business myself I know what it cost to repair a larger tractor so if you can buy a pristen tractor but over thirty years old you can start it and go 30 feet and blow a lower cylinder o-ring and then the money pit begins like was previously mentioned no matter the mfr. So the question is do I buy a better suited older 8n or cub or etc. like my neighbor has a Farmall H with a wheel type 5ft. Bush Hog puts on his straw hat and spends Saturday afternoon mowing his 5 acres then parks it and so what if it blows up buy another H for $1500 and move on. It's just money in the pocket. On the other hand if you want to be a farmer, get out the checkbook and play the part. CT

I find that you can tell a lot about the actual condition of the item for sale based on the condition of the farm where you are buying it... All the stuff laying out in the snow looks a bit concerning... But what can I tell from two photos? The canopy looks nice, unless you need to get underneath some trees.

Trooper... That is good guidance that I will scratch my head over for awhile. I have a NH T1030 that I could spend $800 for a brush cutter at Tractor Supply .... but with those small tires my kidneys would suffer.

I've also been told to just hire it done twice per year.

OR .... I have a 60" mower deck for the SCUT that I won't be using for my lawns .......I could set it high and could just go whittle at the acreage come spring. I borrowed a Ford 5610 with a 7' Woods cutter this summer and cut the heck out of the fields.

Perhaps slowing down a tad is the appropriate action.

I've got one i would sell with a 146 laoder,like new rubber,hi-low shift,but i wouldn't take less than 9000.

When I was at college they had one at the college farm. I really liked it for the couple of times I got to run it. One of the few tractors I hear guys talking about picking up if a nice one were to come up for sale around here. My only disappointment was it was never offered in a row crop or high clearance version.

So what. I know a farm that has a Ford 4600 with 9600 hours on the clock befor it stopped working, 2nd engine and is used 7 days a week! so whats your point?

Early models (1977 to 1979?) were built in Dubuque Iowa. Later models (1980 to 1982?) built in Mannhiem Germany. Early models are distinguished by hood shape/style simular to 2030. (essentially same tractor) Later model had a totally different hood/dash. 219 diesel is proned to electraulysis (sp?) Make certain coolant is clean and changed frequently, as well as monitoring Ph level of coolant. Not easy on fuel. Not exactly overwhelmed with low end grunt. Loudest tractor I"ve ever been around. Hydraulic hi/low can be a nightmare if you ever need to split tractor. Handy size, a little heavy for the HP IMHO.

sarg, I'm just trying to level the playing field some, although I love tractors and enjoy a smooth ride and overpowering the job so I can do other things like riding the Harley but my wife brings things into perspective like do it Saturday and we can ride on Sunday, I hate it when they're right because I want to buy a newer more comfortable mowing tractor but maybe someday I can pay cash for what I want. CT

Your post made me stop and think a bit. It would be nice to have the "big" machine but as others said...... overkill.
As a followup on the scenario ..I was working Saturday evening and a friend whose a local contractor stopped by ..... He's the fellow that let me use his tractor last summer. He said he was working a "deal" with a widow. He would pave her driveway for the tractors her husband left behind. An original 8N and two others. He stated he was keeping the machines ... musta seen the excited look on my face .... but that I could use them. I cut his acreage and then cut my own as well.
I dislike borrowing things but this may evolve into a workable deal.
