Outside barn and motion light questions

A motion light on the barnyard has succomed to old age. Looking t replacing but maybe with one that is on at dusk off at dawn no motion sensor. Question is what ones are energy efficient and i sdon't need a 500 watt flod light.

I can tell you where not to look, Home Depot or Lowes. I have about 6 or 7 such motion lights from the big box stores and within a few years all of them need replacing. They either never come on at the right time, come on falsely, or just do not work at all. Seen many other people with the same issues buying the crap from China.

Course you save a few dollars up front, yet now I am stuck replacing them (read time is money), so the initial savings is a wash. I just now need to find a decent brand of such hopefully made in the USA.

I have a 150 watt flood light connected through a timer. It will come on shortly after getting dark and off when getting daylight, I also have a camera that looks like a floodlight that's connected to a VCR & TV Monitor. I have motion lights out front. You can get them at Home Depot and they have a 10 year free replacement. Just keep your receipts. Hal

Problem i have with motion light is, You have to pounce around in dark to get it on Then continue moving to keep it on. Lose power go through a re-set ceramonie

I too went through the motion light replacement syndrome. I could not find one that would last more than about 2 years. It was expensive and a pain to replace them.

On my new barn I went to a utility company light on the pole by the barn. They installed it and handle all maintenance. Works great, on at dusk off at dawn, about $6/ month. Gives off enough light for security and for general visability.

Then I put switched flood lights over the doors that I can turn on and off as needed, to load or unload stock or supplies late in the evening.

This works much better for my needs.

What's wrong with using a good ol'fashioned 175 watt mercury vapor light? They've served all of rural America for decades.

I was quoted $10/mo for a mercury vaper light by the light company several years ago. I installed my own and at that time, cost about $2/mo for electricity. It would cost a little more today. If I were going to mount one on a new pole 25' off the ground, I'd probably let the light company put it in.(let them climb the pole.) The higher you mount it, the more coverage you get.
