Harbor Freight Engines

Went to HF today to get some things with no moving parts. They have an engine called a Greyhound which is inexpensive. Has anybody got one, and if so what do you think of it?

don't know about their greyhound, but I bought one of their blue engines a couple of years ago for a wacker packer, becasue they're cheaper than a briggs, and the packer usually shakes em to death in a year, this thing has lasted longer than the briggs that i paid 2-3 times more for. and the thing is still under warranty, if it shakes apart they'll give me a new one.

They are sold under many names including hy-best and LCT. I have a full line of parts for them as I am a registered service dealer. I have only had one engine in three years for warranty, and it was abused to the point of failure.

I put one on a 1951 Simplicity model D that I got from my Dad. It works great. I still use it to plow and cultivate my garden. Dad was tight and put auto tires on it. I have put original tractor tires back on it now.

Dave, I bought one in August its a 6.5 hp. So far I have no trouble with it. Its made in China,,, has ball bearings on both ends of the crank. I dont know about getting parts for it?? But I took the muffler off my dead honda, and it bolted right on to the greyhound. Greyhound muffler was to big and it hit the blower I have it on. For $99 bucks you cant go wrong. Good luck.

I bought a 5.5 hp water pump for 28% fertilizer, just change the oil once a year, and add gas. On its 5 year still running strong, best $200 I’ve ever spent on a pump. Replaced a 5.5 Briggs that had failed after 3 years the pump side seals went out, got 28% in the oil and locked up, junk!

How do those motors comply with patents or do the Chinese companies just ignore them? I have one of those motors on a cheap generator and it looks identical to a Honda.

I have a 1951 Montgomery Wards that looks very much like that. The Briggs and Stratton that was on it has a bad valve, I've been considering putting one of those HF motors on it like you did. Thanks for the pic.

They call them a Honda clone....or a Chonda (chinese honda) If you do get the engine from harbor freight (I got a 13hp for $250 dollars) I would buy the 50 dollar 2 year warranty...you can just take it and bring it in and they will give you a new one. The lady told me when it gets close to my 2 years I can just bring it in and say it doesnt have the same power and they will give me a new one. I have a 13hp Honda on a genereator that I have and it looks exactly the same. As far as the quality...it has ran and performed perfectly. The equal honda is around 800 dollars....so seemed like a pretty easy decision to me.

I have a Simplicity just like your with an old Briggs. I hoped to save the engine but can not find any carb kits for it. Anyone know where you can get parts for real old Briggs?

I bought a 6.5 HP and mounted it on my wood splitter (replaced an 8HP Briggs). It would run for a while and die at anything above a fast idle. Called them, got a return authorization and took it in and they replaced it no questions asked. Pretty good hundred bucks I spent. BTW the replacement runs great.

Who makes the Simplicity? It looks like the old David Bradley my grandpa had. Did a lot of garden work with all the different attachments it had.

It came with a Briggs and Stratton. In 1966 I overhauled it. Then sometime in the 70's Daddy replaced it with a Honda. The Honda wore out so I put this one on. I'm looking for B&S similar to what was on it. I also have a turning plow, 42" snow blade, and 36" sickle mower with it. I'm in central Texas about 70 mi south of Dallas, near Hillsboro.

Simplicity is their own company, still in business. I think all they make now is riding tractors. Daddy called it Simple City.

I dunno about the engines, but the way the Chinese comply with patents is they have a bunch of vendors on a street, and before the "patent and copyright police" come thru they go in and notify about 95% of the vendors, who pull their clones off the shelves. The police come in and arrest the rest of them. The clone trade can go on, the government can report that they've gotten tough on violators and everybody's happy, except for the poor schmucks that didn't get the word and got arrested.
