Here is the big Ash getting split. I dident feel like hooking up my 3pt splitter, so I used my towbehind.

I would have loved to had that splitter after "Ike". I had a 90 year old, 60' tall red oak tree in my front yard. It went through my neighbor's roof, and wound up being cut in similar size pieces. I don't know what I would have done with the wood, though. My fireplace doesn't draw worth a hoot, so I would have just given it away.

No not all of them, but more dead ash than any other trees, well, maybe the elms. They had dutch elm disease. I think ash had blight, or borer or something. I have 2 in my back yard for shade trees and so far they are still living.

I end up splitting by hand and ash is one of my favorite woods to split because it tends to break cleanly. I love my 12# wide angle maul, and when it isn't enough I also use the wedges and the 16# sledgehammer. You can really hit things hard with something that heavy. Looks like your splitter is doing a fine job.

nice looking wood, nice pictures jay I went to a ford dealer in tamaqua pa today to get some parts I took some pics for you I will post them . I saw all your nice pics from last night and tonight , very nice, keep them coming.

Yep, that thing is a monky wards, my grandfather bought in 1980 for his sons to use. My dad has split 6-9 cords a year with it ever year since. Dad bought a Huskee last fall so he gave me this one. It must have split a couple hundred cords of wood in its life. Its on its second engine. That ash was real knotty, so buy hand would be tough.

Jay, you could have had all the wood you wanted. There were 22 trees down in my neighborhood alone, almost all oaks. You think an oak tree is substantial until you see the root system. Those mighty oaks have pretty scrawny underpinnings.

All the Ash trees in the USA will be dead in 20 years. There is nothing that will stop the Emerald ash borer bug.....All my ash trees are dead, all of em. I had more then 40 Ash trees, now I have 10 left (all 10 are dead) and they have to be cut down and used for firewood.
