LACK OF POWER MF50/gas

The tractor quit. I checked and had no spark. Investigation, showed the points had closed up due to the cam follower having disintergrated.
Replaced points and condenser. Tractor started, but lacked power, then quit. Also seems to run hot.
After tractor quit,I checked for spark again and had it. Re-gapped points anyway. Still won't start, so, pulled a plug and found it dry. Blew out gas line and carb and tractor started once more. Still lacks power and seems hot.
Could timing be off? How do you time this engine.
Could carb be too lean?
Seems as though this is an ignition problem due to faulty points.Confused by engine starting after blowing out carb. Could this be a coincidental fuel and ignition problem?
HELP,PLEASE.
THANKS,Les

Any time you change the points or the point gap you HAVE to retime the engine. Use a timing light with the engine running and look for a timing mark on the flywheel, maybe inside a cover on the left side of the front of the flywheel housing part of the engine. That's presuming its a Continental engine. I'm not sure without looking up a manual where it is on the Perkins gas often used. The owner's manual would tell you those details. You need one. The I&T manual probably won't give those details.

not familiar with your particular tractor but according to the tune up specs on this site, the timing mark is on the flywheel an is set at 5 btdc. i am assuming that is static timing. check your advance on the distributor and see if it is working. give the rotor a gentle twist and see if it snaps back. if not the weights could be rusted or stuck. if the advance doent work, and it runs retarded, the exhaust manifold will get real hot and the engine will lack power. my minnie moline did that, took a little looking before finally found the problem

There never was a Perkins gas engine in the MF50. That was much later, in the 135/150's. The only gasser used in MF50's was a Continental Z134. Perkins diesels were used in later model MF50's.

Thanks, Gerald!
I purchased the OWNERS,SERVICE and PARTS manuals and have never been so dissapointed. The manual tells me: if timing needs to be set or checked to see a MF dealer.

Glenster, you've told me what I wanted to know. Now if you'll be so kind as to tell me how to access those tune up specs I'll be forever grateful.

THANKS,Les
