Has this income tax disaster happened to any of you?

First thing I hear this morning that the office of my income tax preparer went up in smoke about one o'clock this morning, nothing left but a smoking shell. I went up to see it, only thing I hear from the bystanders is that they took home a flash drive with them everynight, whichI guess contained tax info, don't know anything abouth flash drives, but I know all the receipts etc. I took in is gone. Don't yet know where they were on preparing my return. They served an awful lot of folks here. Anybody been through this?

I haven't got mine in yet, I plan to try to get it in the mail today. I guess they will blame Tea Parties or GWB....lol

You may have just won the IRS lottery,,,,,Give them your fugues at best and the circumstances at hand and how are they to prove other wise......I have heard it works that way with a house or office fire......)

I have never had that happen, but only give the copies of receipts to the preparer and keep the originals locked up.

Global Warming probably caused the fire...

Haven't had that happen, a bigger CPA office will have off-site storage of data, but your physical records that you took in might be gone. I'll assume you'll be doing a tax extension & filing late, with records made as best you can.

Your CPA should end up handling most of that.

Our tax accountant made copies of everything we brought in while we were there, and we took the originals back home with us.

Just curious as to why any of you are taking in the reciepts anyway? I keep all of my farm accounting on computer, then just print out my reports and account summaries and take them in. Never been asked for the actual reciepts.

You should make copies of all your stuff Before you take it into the tax office.

The guy that I use is in his 60's and smokes like a chimmney, in fact his office smells like an old rotten ashtray. Old home too.....So it makes me wonder if his home will go Poof! Like some of the threads on this site.

No, but I did have a CPA that had a mental breakdown. Turned all my stuff over to him, he was supposed to get back to me the next day to sign the return. Never called. I figured he would get it done pretty soon, this was in Febuary. April 15, no return, calls to his office not returned. Finally, about a week late, a package was left at my door in the middle of the night. I turned everthing in, no fines, as I had money coming back. Several years later, a bum came up to me while I was gassing up my car. He called me by name, and that freaked me out!! He was dressed in odd clothes, and lacked a LOT in personal hygiene. It was the CPA! He aplogised, and explained that he had gotten a divorce, and had some personal problems. I gave him $5 for gas, he was living outta his car. Pretty dramatic fall for a guy that was a CPA, had a MBA from UM, and was going to law school. Bad luck, a bad decision, or ?? and anyone could end up like that.

Weird story.......My dad knew of a guy that was 400 pounds, smokes 2 packs a day, (walking heart attack) Well.....The guy has a nervous breakdown and ends up in a home or some sort. He was in sales for industrial equipment or something.
My dad never saw him again.

I"ve been dealing with a group of CPA"s in Willmar for over 20 years, and whether it is pre-planning or year-end, I always keep my info and get a copy of estimates/finals before I leave. This year he mentioned how they switch computer systems every few years, and donate the old equipment (can"t remember where), but is essential that they get rid of any sensitive info on the hard drives. Wouldn"t that be something if they missed that?

Interesting. I always make copies of everything i take to my CPA. He"s 78 now and has a pretty sloppy office, but ive never had a problem in 30 years.

Speaking on the fire. This sorta brings a memory from around the late 80"s regarding a local auctioneer. Word was that IRS agents showed up and wanted all papers involving the auction business for the past 5 years. He says no problem but everything is at his office inside the auction building in town and he would meet them there first thing in the morning. That night the entire building burned to the ground do to a faulty gas furnace. Did i mention this was in July!

That still isn't enough. There are computer forensics outfits that can still pull data off such a drive. Shredding the drive is probably the best answer.

PS. If you've got a drive taken apart, save the magnets... Very powerful. Useful for lots of things.
