wd-45 power steering

There was an add on power steering from char-lynn. I think the pump was driven by the distributer gear. Probably rare as hens teeth now days. Anything is possible with enough money and imagination though!

Since the throttle follows the steering shaft down, what I have seen is an offset in the throttle shaft to go around the 'motor' on the steering shaft. So, you not only need the steering parts, also would need the offset for the throttle-unless your into doing it yourself! Greg

Mine is a 1953/54 and would it be tuff to put one on and where could a person find one.MANY THANKS

Hard part is finding factory units. They fit on the shaft, below the gas tank, and the pump and reservoir mount under the hood. Also need a double V crankshaft pulley to drive the pump- they are spendy. Can fit any WD or WD45. Another is a CharLynn aftermarket system where the steering motor mounts in line with the steering shaft. I think they were the ones that made a pump that mounted in line with the distributor drive. Again, hard to find used ones. I"m working on an idea to use a combine hydrostatic drive and combine steering axle on my reversed WD. Much simpler than finding a factory or aftermarket setup.

Do you have the narrow front or a wide front? With a wide front you could put on a hydrolic steering unit from a combine and just run hoses to the tie rod mounted cylinder. We did that with a John Deere AR that the steering shaft broke on and no replacement to be had. Will not work with a narrow front end though.

If you want it to use I would suggest a CharLynn. Best way to do this is gather the main parts, Pump, Torque generator and Crank pulley. You will need the pump for that tractor and if you buy the pump and generator new you will wind up spending about $1000 for these components. After you have picked up these bits find another tractor that has this setup and use it to copy the brackets. Best to do it with the other tractor in the same shop.

I have done this, it is doable but is a bit of a project.

If you want original that is quite another story. They are out there but kinda hard to come by. There is a lot of specific bits to the OEM setup that would be missed if you aren't familiar. Throttle linkage etc.

Nother option is to put a hydraulic motor on the shaft at the steering gear box and then use a rotary valve for your steering wheel like out of a combine.

All of these options need their own pump though. The pump on that tractor won't work well for power steering if at all.

We used a power steering pump from a car or truck with the built in oil resorvor and drove it off the fan belt.
