How to ship heavy parts

I'm wondering what options exist for shipping parts that are too heavy to send by US mail (over 70#) and whether anyone has used them. I had something shipped to me LTL once, but that had to be palletized, which is a bit of a job if you aren't set up for it. I suppose another way is to find a third party going your way and get them to do it, but I can see some potential pitfalls there too. Any thoughts will be much appreciated.

I'm not sure ... but I think UPS takes heaver things ... how heavy I'm not sure .... I'm sure someone else will jump in here and help...

UPS will do up to 150#. Iv shipped some and recieved some that way. Company I work for does UPS that way. They allso use FEDEX on some. The problem with pallets is pallets weigh 50# so can get heavy real fast.
 
Ups will take up to 500 lbs through their freight division.Maybe more than that weight.Normal stores are up to 150 lbs.

I use FedEx for most things under 150#. My experience has been that they are usually faster and less expensive than UPS.

For heavier things, I usually go LTL. I just shipped a pallet of parts from IA to NC that weighed about 800# for less than $300.
 
You need to fill in the gaps to help you much. UPS 150lbs max normal shipping but again more info needed. Cost as for UPS goes up buy weight and size of box. I once shipped a guy a head for a Lerio engine and shipping cost him as much as I wanted for the head. Last I knew he was more then pleased with that head to tell the truth I would love to know how his project went
 
Can't add a whole lot to what the others have said.

UPS will take stuff up to 150# but it does get spendy & they have a number of hoops you need to jump through. IE it needs to be in a cardboard box etc.

For larger items I use LTL carriers. All of these are kinda handy for me as there is a warehouse in my town and I can make a appt to meet with a LTL driver and there is a business in town that operates a drop point for UPS. I would most likely use FedEx if I didn't have to drive 40 miles to drop the item.

With LTL carriers keep in mind there are steep discounts. The rate you get online without a discount you can most likely cut in half. The other thing you need to do with LTL is state what is in the box. Makes a huge difference in the rates.

Nother possibility that I have used ONCE. I have a OTR Logistics company in my town and am pretty good friends with some of the drivers. I got a garden tractor shipped to OH this way for $100. Need to make sure the receiver has the needed facilities which is quite another story.

less than load

freight forwarders gather bunch of small orders and make up a full load, costs just about as much to move full truck as nearly empty truck
 
UPS does NOT have to be in a cardboard box. I have shipped odd pieces various ways, bolting or wiring to a piece of plywood or board so they will set level and ride good. Sometimes wrap with plastic, etc. You just gotta be creative. UPS charges something like $7 for "special handling" if it's not in a box but if it's over 70 lbs they are going to charge you the $7 anyway so you have nothing to loose.
 
Yeah Cowman you are correct about the box part.

Only thing for me is the people who are the drop off point thing anything that requires a up charge means you just can't do it. But that once again is quite another story.

Anymore on stuff under the weight limit I use the USPS. Rates are pretty much the same after you add insurance (makes USPS cheaper on non insured stuff) and I can accurately figure out the cost at home.

shipped a JD "A" crankshaft to Merfield by UPS for a stroke job wrapped in old carpet with duct tape around it ...he said that is the way he ships all his shafts
 
Had a small firesafe shipped to me once. Weighed about 80 to 90 pounds. These safes are not heavy with metal, in fact outside is pretty thin. They are filled with powdered stone to protect from heat and fire. By the time UPS dropped it a few times, it was ruptured in several places, a real total loss. Replacement came thru with a couple dents, but not leaking dust all over the place.
