lawn tractor tire repair

i have a small hole in my rear tire on my deere rider could i just buy a plug kit and plug it.or just take it to a repair shop.

I've found that plugs dont work real well on a low speed tire, it takes some heat for the plug to seal well like you would get from a passenger car tire on the road. A patch on the inside would be a more reliable fix for your tire.

I have had good luck with plugs on many tires, including ATV and other slow speed tires, I buy the kind that comes with a liquid sealant. I have also used the arresol sealant with great success on a lawn tractor tire that was so weather checked that it oozed out in many places, but it fixed it. I know dismounting it and putting a patch on the inside is the right way but how much time and money do you want to spend on it?

I would strongly recommend removal and repair with inside patch. Tube would also be a good idea. Have had less than satisfactory results with plugs. Last summer I got a nasty sidewall gash in mine - patched it with a large inside patch. Still holding up, saved me having to buy a new tire. Actually two, as I want to replace turf tread with a real tractor tread when the time comes.

I would either patch it or install a tube like I did on these since one rim had pin holes from rust and the other tire was leaking. Hal

I've never had a plug work in a lawn tractor tire. I don't think they get hot enough to seal properly (as if plugs EVER really seal). I've SLIMED all my lawn equipment tires and the problem is now solved.

i run a small engine repair shop...if tire comes off to repair,a tube goes in.
slow leaks get Slimed.
mower tires arent thick enuff to hold a plug unless its a combo patch/plug that installs from the inside.

i fooled around with trying to fix the tires in my lawntractor and finally just gave up and put on new tires why screw around? fix it once do it right the first time and save time in the long run

The henskin tires that come with a $2000 mower will leak if you look at them the wrong way. I end up tubing all of mine.

The best way is to put a tube in but before doing the tube check it for thorns and maybe even put a liner in so as to save it from thorns if you have that problem that is

Patch the hole from in side and tub it.problem
solved.I have used plugs but I dip them in rim seal put the plug in twist two times pull the handle and cut it off and set on fire I let it burn till it melts into the tire.It works.

The best is patch it and tub it.

Once you've found the hole, the secret to pluggin any tire is to REAM THAT SUCKER OPEN, seriously...take that round file that comes with the kit and open it up so the plug inserts properly and wait at least a half hour for the glue to dry before you put air into it..

if i had a nickel for every NEW mower tire i've put on that leaks thru the rubber i could buy a couple gallons of gas...every tubeless tire that comes in with leaks that is repairable either gets Slimed or tubed.

Like the other guys said, a plug won't really get warm enough to seal completely, but if you put Slime in the tire after you plug it, it works pretty well.

How old are the tires, they may be cracked all over even if they look good. Plug and leak, plug and leak. Have a tube put in.

I've seen a few lawnmower tires that have been plugged and they have held. But , like any plugged tire , over time with wear and tear ,they all will probably start leaking. I will never slime a tire without first putting in a tube as the slime if it is not contained within a tube ,will eat away at the steel rim and rust / eat it out . There's also the mess of the slime running out of the tire if you ever take it off the rim without having a tube in it to hold it. Yes , a tube filled with slime will still leak if it is punctured, but hopefully the slime will plug the hole and prevent it from leaking much .
