Massey 265 HOT

I’ve got a Massey 265 that is getting hot on me. Top & bottom hoses are hot, belt is tight and radiator is clean. What do you all think is wrong, water pump??
Thanks, Olen

If both hoses are hot, it would seem to me that you have an air flow problem or the radiator coolant flow is restricted. Can you see through the radiator fins? Is the fan in good condition, not bent? Do you have a shroud around the fan?

Check the impellers in the pump they may be worn. Set the thermostat a pan of water and heat it and use a thermometer to see what temp it opens. Hal

Years ago I had an impeller come off the water pump shaft on a slant 6 Mopar. When that happened, circulation stopped and it soon overheated. Every other time I had a water pump fail, it started leaking out the shaft, but the shaft, seal and bearings were fine on that one. Kind of hard to figure it out, but finally when I took off the pump, the impeller fell out on the ground.

I would suggest looking into the radiator neck when the engine is operating and warm enough to open the thermostat. Obviously, don't do this after it is hot, and already have the radiator cap off when you start the tractor. If you do not see coolant moving in the upper radiator tank, either the water pump is not pumping or the thermostat has stuck closed. I have never seen a thermostat stuck closed--all of them have failed by sticking open in my experience, but I guess it could happen.

If you do this test, be real careful. Hot coolant CAN shoot out the filler opening under certain conditions.

If the coolant starts bubbling out of the radiator, I would suspect a head gasket problem. I have no experience with Masseys, so I don't know how much hassle it would be to replace a head gasket on one. But I would always advise at least checking the flatness of the head surface and also the block deck surface whenever a head gasket fails. BTDT, with some bad memories of doing a job twice.

But hopefully you will find a stuck thermostat, or something easy. Good luck!

I have a 165 that was getting hot and finaly found the pully on the water pump was slipping on the shaft. It is press fit how it did that i will never know and it did not come off and go through the radiater. The radiater never boiled the gadge would just show hot. good luck
