Was lookin in the local shopper that comes out on sundays, and found a set of 13-38 tires for the JD B. called the guy and said there was 50% tread left on em, went and got em and gave him 100 bucks for the pair. Thought it was a fair deal, what u all think?

As Cowboy said if they ain't dry rotted you done great. I just bought a new set of 20.8-38's, compared to what I paid for Firstone SATs you really done great!!!

If they got any poop on them, you got ripped off.............. Otherwise, you's prolly OK.

Good find,

Dave

If you bought 13-38 tires they are very old, over 30+ years and new size would be 14.9 - 38 and would realy make that tractor fly down the road and first gear with them on would be equal to second gear with the proper size on them. On a 47 up B a 12.4 equal to 11 would be max for use and that is 1 size over, now on a up to early 47 even the 11-12.4 is oversizing them way too much. The tires you say you bought would be over size even for a G. At any price and condition if you bought them for a B you got took, now for a G you may have made it OK but do not put that over a size on a B as it could very well cause handling problems like the brakes not being able to stop you.

NO, thet are not just wider but taller, they will be 6" taller and that will make a very big jump in diameter and that will speed things up very quickly. I don't have the formula here to figure diameter or up to circumfrence but it will make probley 2' more travel for every reveloution. That would change the ground speed probably from about 10 MPH to as least 13 or 14MPH. The only tire size that had a wider version was the 12-13.6 that is the same height as a 15.5. The correct size for a B is 10" and if you take a 13" you are adding 3" to not only one side but both for a 6" increase in diameter. I had the 10-11.2" on me 46 B, 11-12.4" on my 49 B, 12-13.6" on my 51 A and the 13-14.9 on the big tractor a Moline U that put out 55 PTO HP. And changing to that much morr speed the brakes will be to small to stop the tractor at that speed and if they are indeed the 13 x 38 tire so old one will probably blow out and if at that high speed possibly cause the tractor to roll as it would be way too much drop too fast for you to control with steering. The 10 x 38 should have a diameter of 58" while the 13 x 38 will have a diameter of 64", do some math.

Thanks for the info, but no need to be such a jerk about it! Aske a simple question and this it what i get in response, its people like you that make people like me not want to come back on this board! i had no idea that the tires went up in size the wider they went, y dont it say that on the side then, It only makes sense! BOB

Besides i had an earlier post on the subject of tires for it and someone chimed in and said to go with a bigger than stock tire cause the stock ones looked too small on it, he said that he went one size bigger and it still didnt look rite! in my opinion its what the owner of the tractor wants, not what some bashin random jerk wants to say, and its only a hundred bucks, not like he charged me 3-4 hundred for em, if i dont like em on there i can always resell them myself!

It's a forum molinebob. You gotta develop a thick skin and remind yourself that the advice given here is worth exactly what you pay for it.

If you were going to be working the snot out of this tractor day in and day out, then yeah, I'd be concerned about getting the right tire size.

HOWEVER, the most work this old tractor will probably see is a couple hours at a plow day once or twice a year. Am I right?

So you run a gear lower to plow. A lot of guys do run slower than normal at plow days, and run one less bottom than they normally would... Why not? No sense in breaking the old equipment.

It is your right to do as you want but I just do not want to be around when you wreck to pick up the pieces. Only trying to give practical advice. I think the one acting like you is the jerk.
