value of good tag on tractor

Hi, Lets use an L John Deere as an example. One has a good serial number tag and the other tractor doesn't have a tag. Both tractors are identical and in the same condition with similiar tires, paint etc.

How much more is the tractor with the good tag worth?

In my book, a serial number tag is the most important part on the machine, especially if its a low production tractor. You got to have a way to prove what you got.

Lots of Green tractors around with purchased tags that didnt come with the tractor. I know a person who sells them. So be careful when you buy one as the tag mite not just be original. Some green tags have been sold for big bucks.

depends on the tractor. if you think you have something rare and out of the ordinary, the tag gives it proof its legit and actually worth something. example - 730 gas standard or high seat 60 standard, etc.

lets say the tag is gone off a ordinary Minneapolis Moline U or MH 44. the serial number would basically be worth nothing.

IMO, on you example of JD L's........it wouldnt matter much to me, pricewise maybe a hundred or two dollars if the tractors were in good condition.

Good question, bout all I know is:
Aluminum tag, about 50 cents/pound scrap price.
Steel tag, about $155/ton, scrap price.
So, deduct amount from total tractor value if missing tag...
probably worth more than my two cents worth...
What a SAD answer...
And now, back to more intelligent replies...

I buy tractors for their quality & useablity.

So to me the tractor is the valuable thing, don't really look at a tag.

But - if someone brings this topic up, I kinda would back off on dealing with them - I take a dim view of tampering with an original serial number on a tractor. Would be grounds for no sale.

Not sure what your angle is on this, or what games you are trying to play. Suspicious question tho....

What about the possibility of the no tag tractor being stolen?

I'd shy away from it for that reason alone.

Sorry I can't give you a Number on value. I think on that model it is in the $500 to $1000. On others Tag value is much less but the JD L it is momumental.

What the others don't seem to know is Mother deere really screwed up when they put the tags on that particular model. It is on the rear axle right where your right foot would rub it till it falls off.

The value of the tag is purely for collectibility. Little or no value otherwise.
