My dizzy sister has been told by optometrist that she has cataracts. She has no assets and no insurance. Pension is spent the day the check comes. Any advice appreciated. She seems to think surgery is around 9 or 10 thousand. Dave

I have Medicare A&B. Replacement lenses cost me approximately $1300.00 out of pocket in 2003. I don't think they just remove cataracts anymore. Medicaid would pay 100% if she can get qualified.

In my work in a former life, I was involved in insurance billing. The previous advice to get Medicare A&B is good. It sounds as though she maybe elgibible for Medicaid to pickup premiums and copays. Income levels vary from state to state for Medicaid elgibility. Start at county Social Services to determine elgibility.

I recently had cataract surgery and medicare and supplemental insurance paid all of it and they paid for a new set of glasses. I live in Oklahoma.
