My neighbor was cutting hay , lost the power steering, and the hydraulics to lift the mow co.
Steering very hard just vibrates when trying to turn. Checked fluid in trans, at the full mark.
Ran about 8 hrs today, just lost steering and hydraulics. Pump in front of engine has a leak ( dripping not spraying out) Is there a relief valve that could be sticking? Can we test the pressure at the rear hydraulic connections? What psi should we expect to see? No whine from pump.
Is there anything we should check before we pull the pump out. It just happened quickly. This had the engine replaced last year. Steering box was rebuilt 2 years ago. We have no manule to go by. Just need to know what we need to look for before we take apart. I am a GM master technician, just trying to help him out. Can some one help with diagnosis? Thank You HAL

Drain the oil out of the transmission and pull the plate off the bottom of the transmission. There is a filter in there made of wire mesh, which was completely plugged on my 1100. It is the only strainer between the return lines from implements and the charge pump. Unfortunately I also found that my charge pump, which supplies oil to the main pump and power steering, had eaten a circlip and was virtually useless. A new Cessna pump was out of the question. I found an aftermarket replacement at a salvage yard.
Good luck and save the oil. There is a lot of it. After it settles out, pour it back in through a fine paint filter. Discard the last few cups, that’s where most of the water and heavy dirt are. Place a strong magnet in the bottom of the tranny when you put the cleaned out strainer back in, it will catch some of the steel floating around in there.
There are other good instructions on this site about the relief valves under the battery box and what they do.

Thanks I will pass this information on to him. It just dosen't sound like the main pump to me.
The charge pump is that inside the transmission?
Well I guess will find out when we get the bottom plate off. Thanks HAL

Your hyd filter could be plugged. It is up front by the radiator. There is no by-pass in them,so when it plugs there are no hyds.Like they said you also need to check the screen in the bottom to.Good luck.

Yes Gene I would check the filter system 1st. I also ask questions before I replace something. As my 1st post stated, NO MANUAL . I work on automobiles and trucks, Don't see many tractors rolling into our dealership.
I'm am looking for posablities, as I am not familiar with this system. Tell me where the filters are and I will check them. This is not my tractor. I am just trying to help my neighbor out. Helpful information is appreciated. Thank You. HAL

Well we cleaned both filters. Pulled the top off of the transmission, where the hydraulic hoses attach. Under the cover there is a pump, and a valve beside it. On top of this valve there was a allen adjustment screw, almost all the way out( one thread left). The pump seemed to be turning ok, and sounded like it was moveing what oil was left in the pump. We tightened the allen screw on the valve to be flush with the housing.
Put it back on, NO pressure. cracked line on rt side of cover ( no fluid pressure.) there was a tee fitting on the rt side with a cap on it. We removed the cap , the line was full but no pressure. We removed the cover again and I will take apart the pump to see it there is a key sheared on the rotor or just what is happening with this pump. Is there anything else I should be looking at while I have this cover apart?
The gear on the transmission shaft has play but does turn when the engine is cranked. If you move it by hand it does have some play back and forth. Is this normal, or should we investigate this further?
Thanks HAL
