From sitting on a shelf?
Was just offered one to fit my tractor but there's nothing wrong with the one on it. I'd get it just in case but don't want to have a worthless pump if I ever need it.

Thanks,

Dave

Depends on how long it has been on the shelf. I have cranked up diesels that had been sitting for years. Sometimes you get away with it and sometimes they crap out.If you can get it for the right price. Might be nice to have as a backup parts pump or one that they could rebuild. Some pumps are hard to find.

If it just came off a test bench it will be fine sitting for a long time. The bench oil will protect them. If it just came off of a machine it will depend on the fuel that is in it. If it had kerrosene ran through it before shutting down the engine it will be good for sure, diesel fuel maybe maybe not.

Probably not worthless unless it has been used already as somebody else mentioned. New or rebuilt would have plenty of good parts if you needed them. Cost me $700 to get my CAV-DPA pump rebuilt last year and about $500 of that was parts.

YMMV,

Would depend on the price and model of pump. If
you can buy it right and it is a popular model, you can always put it on ebay later.

The metering valve is a minor detail and can easily be freed with only minor disassembly of the pump.

The REAL nasty one is that the PLUNGERS stick in the retracted position so the pump moves NO fuel even with the metering valve wide open.

I had a CAV pump rebuilt last year. Cost 850.00 dollars. Owner let it sit for six months with water in it. All they could save was the housing.
