I decided to put an areation pump in my farm pond last summer.Since then i've replaced the pump three times. It's been under warrantee from menards, but a pain just the same.Last week the third one quit.I was using sump pumps supposedly filled with oil to last forever. Is there a better type pump to use?Kasco makes a small 1/2 horse pump, but it's 900 bucks.I thought those sump pumps would be more dependable, but i guess not.

I manage the lake at our sportsmans club - some members donated an aerator cause they wanted to see the water squirting in the air. It was nothing but trouble, finally I made a little presentation to the effect its much cheaper to buy a few fish than to throw money at that thing. Fact we have never had a fish kill in the 10 yrs I have been doing it so its a safe bet. If you must have some O2 in the lake an airpump on shore/difuser plate in the lake is the only way to go.

How big a pump do you need; a 4800 gph water garden pump will cost around 100 bucks and last for years; there are larger sizes available.

That's what i've been buying, but three shot in a year.I guess there not made for that.

I"m using a pump made for bottom based aeration (pump is shore mounted) and is made for continuous duty. Fish places sell them but they typically sell the whole kit which can run upwards of $1000. You can usually buy just the pump for a couple hundred and run your own airline. The diffuser is another animal. Using a rubber diaphram one now and it"s been rgeat. until I had the cash for that, it was a coil of airhose at the bottom with a bunch of pinholes in it.
All this is assuming you"re looking to aerate the pond and not pump water out of it.
If you need more details, feel free to email/post back. I"ve been monkeying with it for about 10 years now and had a few not so successful attempts along the way.

I have been running my aerator for 2 1/2 years straight. 24hr/7days/365 you get the idea. The only time the pump is off is when we loose electricity at the house.

If you are using a sump pump you are probably making a small "fountain". I burnt up pumps, extension cords, etc. doing the same thing. Even tried a well pump for a while.

This setup pumps air down to the bottom of the pond to the diffuser. I paid around $500 for mine with an extra diffuser. It has a Gast continuous duty motor on it. I split my air line so I can aerate both my ponds at once.

Only maintenance in 2.5 years is a $4 air filter.

My pond was very heavy with algae. 2008 I saw minor improvements maybe 25% less algae, 2009 I had about 70% less algae. For 2010 I have 2 spots about 3 foot around.

I bought mine from a place called Stony Creek Pond Supplies. They are near Grand Rapids MI if you want to google them.

Hope this helps.

Check this out- it pumps water from the top to the bottom, setting up a slow current that then brings the bottom water up at the outside. I know they work- I've known the proprietor since college. You can actually get a pond aerated enough that trout will spawn in in, in the cooler climates where water does not get too warm.
