Does anyone know what this part does that I found on ebay? Im not buying it but was wondering what it is used for and how? Here is the link

ytmag will not let post the link but if go to ebay and type Surge milker there is electrical device called a milk pump timer with a glass cover over the timer that covers the cam and contact switch. Im wondering what timer does?

On DeLaval, they controlled the pulsations (milking rate) electrically. Had a mercury switch attached to the vacuum pump, and a 12 volt power source. Electrical wire followed the vacuum line, and controlled a pulsator attached to plug in at vacuum line. That controlled a secondary pulsator at the milker.

I'm sure that the Surge milkers used mechanical pulsators. But they also may have had models with electrical, that I'm not familiar with.

Not sure but I suspect it's some form of the early line pulsation. I know they did have electronic line pulsation and I think it used some type of mechanical switch like that.
It's worth would be very small unless it's collectable to someone...

It's CLEARLY for a milk PUMP, not a pulsator or milker BUCKET.

A milk pump would be used to transfer milk from a milk pipeline or a roll-around portable tank unit (I can't remember Surge's name for them) to the bulk tank or from the bulk tank to the truck.

The timer PROBABLY was to control the pump to keep it running for a set time after the probe (note orange wire "To Electrode" on the attached tag) no longer sensed milk in order to allow the pump empty the pipeline or tank before shutting off.

That's my GUESS, FWIW!

Ray, Surge DID make quite a few electric pulsators, here's ONE type. Note, they don't call it a "timer".

I'm kinda guessing this so don't take my word.
The timer thing would be on each milking station and as cow was being milked at a certain point the vacuum to teat cups drops off finishing that particular cow, realeasing her from active duty.

The pulsation control would determine the speed that would milk cows at a comfortable speed to said cow.

I KNOW the answer for this, we had on in our pipline system before it died and was replaced with an electronic unit. this is the pump timer for the reciever jar. this jar is where the milk collected from the pipe lines until it reched the electrode censors in the jar. then this triped and pumped for a preset time and pumped the milk through the filter line and into the bulk tank.

Bob is correct as to what the thing is and how it works.
I milked cows for 30 years while one of those ran the milk pump long enough to empty the 2 gallon ? glass bubble in the pipeline.

Used to burn up those little cam operated micro switches about once per year until we wired a small contactor between the micro switch and pump motor.

Good guess!! Exactly!! In the receiver jar, when milk contacted two electrodes, it activated a motor with a cam onnit, tripping the micro's both on and off, which activated a contactor, running the milk pump for a set time.

Our Surge pipeline milker with electronic pulsators had a mechanical timer .
a stainless steel box(8X12) with a motor driven cam switching a micro switch and arc / noise suppression cap.
You could change the pulsator on / off rate by swapping out cam wheels.
