Opinions on swathers/disc mowers

Looking into upgrading swathers. We currently run a 488 NH which is a sickle haybine. While a good machine it doesn't have the capacity I need any more. So here is the question, I am looking at the TM 800 Vermeer,MC 840 and 1030 Vermeer and Hesston 1340, NH 1431 or 1411. While I know this is a long list, I am looking at opinions as to which machine would be the best for the money. All are priced nearly the same for good used or (new TM 800) in our area. I run 350 acres of brome, fescue and native prairie with a fair number of terraces.

Hey Eric, where ih KS are you?Marion,Cottonwood Falls,ElDorado area?I was raised in that area, still have family there.Beautiful country,Easpeacilly the Flint Hills. They still cut lots of "P" hay.

I won't reccommend any of them, as I haven't run any from your list. I'll just say that when I was looking ot upgrade a year and a half ago, the Vermeer dealer (also Case/IH) said he'd sell me a Vermeer if I really wanted it, but none of his customers who'd bought one were happy, and he'd done everything he could to make it work right...he'd rather sell me a Case/IH, new or used (same as NH). I don't know what Stuart has against NH - they have a good reputation around here. I ended up going with a pair of used MacDon sickle types - another 9' pull type, and a 14' self-propelled.

We have had a Case IH 8312 since 1995 and have cut about a thousand acres a year with it.......it just runs and will cut anything from prairie grass to cane taller then the 1486 tractor cab.........it uses the same cutter unit as a hesston 1340 but has a stronger......thicker anyway ,tongue and frame.......I would buy another one in a heartbeat........
Good luck in your search,
Tom

last year upgrde my cutter went with a 925 disc jd look at case but hard to work on jd had easys to work on pull it with 6400 jd and can out cut my old one 1014 hesston 14ft two to one i can cut grass hay about 8 mi hour can not stay in the seat to go faster

We're up in northeast Kansas, I do love that area down by Wichita though, my brother in law is stationed at Mcconnell, so we are fortunate enough to make that run through the Flint Hills once in awhile, beautiful country!

Why? I've been running 1411's for 15 years. No problems, just a new set of knives a year. I've never plugged one, they will cut thru anything.

I"ve owned a Hesston 1340 hydra swing for about 7 years now. I bought it used and the dealer told me it had cut approximately 10,000 acres at trade in. I've NEVER done anything to it other than change knives and oil in the cutterbar at the end of each season. I've probably cut 4000 acres with it since I"ve had it. Absolutely ZERO problems. I did plug it up one time trying to cut some 7' sudan.

Hey, that hesston hydro swing would be your best bet IN MY OPINION. Farmed for a very maint. poor farm in Colo. for 5 years. That damn thing never got any work done to it at all but still cut great. We cut 1000 acres of Alfalfa, Sudan, Oats, etc and it didn't care. I would love to have one for myself now. Though if the other comment is correct about the stronger tounge and what not, that would be ideal!
