Check engine light has been going off and on for some time, code says Vapor Recovery System leak, tried new gas cap no luck. Took it to the dealer, they charged me $65 for diagnostics, and the receipt says "needs vent valve replaced $217 plus tax". Does anyone have a guess on which valve this is, and where I can buy one cheaper?

Thanks
Rich

I'd check w/the local parts store like Oreilly. Theyll be able to tell you if it a dealer only part. Chances are it is nothing to even be cobcerned with.

Mine went bad in my 05 chevy 1/2 ton, said they had to remove the tank to replace it.It cost over 300 bucks.I found out later it was still under warranty up to 100000 miles.

It's the EVAP vent valve causing the problem. The vent valve filter is getting clogged with dust from gravel roads and not allowing tank vapors to vent properly and setting the code.

Get GM's parts upgrade which includes instructions on re-locating the vent filter. Not terribly hard to replace.Done lots of them already.

Let me know if you need more info(email open).

The problem you are having has NO effect on driveability of the vehicle or mileage.

It's simply a nagging bunch of BS that you are not being a good "GREEN" guy and are releasing a little gasoline vapor to the atmosphere.

HOW much money do you want to spend to avoid this non-problem???

Just a reminder... ORANGE warning lights mean you are polluting a bit and RED lights mean the engine is overheating or low on oil pressure. You needn't sweat the orange ones.

This may sound strange, but have you been losing any coolant? I have a 2006 3/4, and started getting a lot of intermittant codes, from mass air flow, to vent, to cat. convertor. Turned out my intake manifold gaskets were leaking, a very, very common problem with these chevys. Usually starts just over 100k miles.

We once had a Pontiac minivan with that no-account 3.4 engine. The SES light kept coming on with a code for the evap system. I went through the entire evap system, including changing the canister, and nothing made any difference.

Being a 3.4 engine, very soon the intake gaskets started leaking and after they were replaced there was no more code for the evap system. I have no idea what the connection could be.

It's not just the 3.4. I think almost all chevys have had that problem. Some say it's the Dexcool, others say it's the gaskets themselves.

I checked the manual this evening and the EVAP system is covered for 8 years or 80,000 miles, will talk to the dealer tomorrow.

Sounds like a deal to me,,,, you should take'em up on it....

I have cleaned the filter and got it to pass,,, always comes back for a replacement valve,,,, fix'n it rite the first time seams to be the way to go....
Bite the bullet update it and move on...

When a check engine/Service engine soon light is on the ecm will not go into closed loop it stays in open loop(Cold start mode) and that means its not getting the best mpg. Most times fixing the problom that is setting the check engine/service engine soon light of will save you money in the long run. Sometimes the what is setting the check engine/service engine soon light off can cause damage to the engine or cat converter. (over rich or lean, engine miss, Knock senser, ect,and many more codes. Best to fix probloms
