OT: Illinois Travel Route Advice

I'm headed to the family reunion in northern Michigan from Kansas and I would like to avoid Chicago if at all possible. It looks like I could cut east from I-55 on US 24 over to US 421 and then head north back up to I-94 or I could head east on Illinois 17 around Dwight and make my way over to US 421. Does anyone familiar with the area have a preference/suggestion? Thanks.

might be quicker to just come up i-55 and take i-80 east into indiana, then jump on 94. you may loose an hour in traffic, but the cross county route your looking at will take you quite a ways out of your way,.

Unless you absolutely have to see the arch, avoid taking 70 into St.Louis. Take the 270 loop around the north side. Stay on 270 till you get to 55/70 interchange in Troy IL.You can either go north on 55 or take 70 to I 57N at Effingham.Stay on 57 to 80.Good Luck.

If you take I70 to I57, you will have several options- cut across on 24 to 421, turn off at Chebanse to get to 421, or continue up to I80. There is a toll is you take 80, and traffic can be a mess. I just came home (outside Champaign, IL) yesterday from Michigan, took 421 from Michigan City and cut across to I57 at Chebanse. Not a bad way to go. Better scenery and less traffic.

I just came and went to Yellowstone from Mich adn blasted right around Chicago on the 80 bypass. I've been around it a few times but not in 15 yrs. I don't see what all the fuss is about. The hwy is good (as good as any other)with good signage and I had no problem with a 5th wheel once in day, once in night.
