Drove home from SC today and saw a guy combining his corn already. Is that normal timing?

How early does corn get planted down there?

This was between Georgetown and Manning

Been so dry I wouldnt dought if he was just trying to save something of it. Way back when, we cut ours sometime late in Sept. if I rememenber right.

A lot of guys are picking corn around here in SE NC. We are not far from SC. In this area, corn is usually planted between the last week of March and the middle of April. Some guys take a chance on a late frost to avoid the risk of dry weather when the ears are forming and the hurricanes and tropical storms later in the summer.

Lots of people have already started picking deer corn. We had a good bit left over from last year so maybe 2 weeks or so we will start.

We visit Lake Mattamuskeet in northeastern North Carolina every August. They are always picking when we visit. Big farms with good soil & a LOT of Olivers & Whites. Always a pleasure to visit.
