I am in Tennessee right now with my family and we are about 10 miles from the Douglas dam. Is this worth going to see? Can you see the water falling through the hydroelectric turbines? Chime in now and tell me, we are thinking about going to see this on Wednesday.
I did a search on the net and the Tenn. valley authority has several dams and the Douglas dam is the closest.

Don't know about the Douglas dam,but most of them are pretty impressive as far as size goes. Most of them that's I've seen, the road goes across them so you can drive right over them. You can see a long ways off the low side of them. I've never seen the water in the turbines,no,but you can usually drive down along the underside of them and see the water coming out. I'f you're within 10 miles,I'd go. If nothing else, the scenery getting there should be worth looking at.

Last time, 3 yrs ago, that I tried to visit a dam they where closed to the public. chain link fence etc.

g.g. Certainly not a hover Dam . I am at the other end of the state and have been over, around and in most of the TVA dams but I am not sure. Since 9 11 Public acces has really been restricted. Worth driving over and seeing anyway even if you don,t get to get in. Best I remember TVA has a good v isitor center there. That was one of the original that started the valley move to cheap electric.

I live not far from there and if you have never seen a moderately large dam it is something to see. As far as access you are not going to have much, you can drive right up to the dam but not going to be able to go inside. As far as water running over the top that is actually a pretty rare occurence that only happens during periods of extrememly heavy rainfall. For the most part they release water underneath the dam as that is wear the turbines for the generators are at. Bottomline if you are not to far away it is a pretty area and would be worth spending a couple of hours to go see.

Pickwick dam and the locks there are pretty neat, no access anymore. Go every fall down there for vacation with my girlfriend.
