Has anyone installed a hydraulic oil filter?

Has anyone installed a hydraulic oil filter in an older tractor that originally didn't come with one? If so, are there any pitfalls to avoid? Thanks. George

Be careful you don't get it in a pressure line and have it explode. Filters must normally be in some sort of bypass line to keep from getting to much pressure.

Filters should be in the return line. Often such does not exist on tractors since the system is inside the housing. The worst place for a filter is on the suction line- pump cavitation can occur. Pressure line filters are available at high prices.

A lot of the Oliver and Molines had filters on teh suction side of the pump, you just have to make sure that they have a bypass spring on them to prevent the cavitation.

I agree it is better to have them on the return side, but a lot of the older tractors it is much easier to put the filter on the suction side.

Surplus center sells filters for both sides pretty cheap.

I just did research to install a filter. From what I found earlier systems generally had "suction strainers" while later systems use "return filters".
Suction strainers are installed on the line from the reservoir. These can be in tank or spin-on type and are usually a 100 mesh or 150 micron screen with a 3-5 psi by-pass.
Return filters are installed at the last point in the system in the line going into the reservoir and are usually a 10 or 25 micro filter.
Discounthydraulichose.com can give you a good selection of filter options.
When selecting filter components make sure you pay attention to flow capacity.

High pressure filters for the pressure line are
available, but must be sized properly so as
not to restrict the system flow, and be rated
for the system pressure..and are VERY EXPENSIVE !

Most of the filters I have seen installed have been from the return side of an add-on valve to run a loader, log splitter, baler, etc. on tractors that only used one-way cylinders for lifting when new.
