FARMALL 656 TRACTOR

HI Fist timer
I have a farmall 656 diesel with a front loader but i dont know what it is. If it is a hydro or what how can I TELL? Also how fast should it be going under no load . This was my father in laws and he is now passed .
Thanks for any responce

A 656 with gear drive has a conventional clutch pedal and shifter levers. A hydro will have a similar pedal but it is not connected to a mechanical clutch. It will have a lever control for infinite speed selection from creeping to road speed. The loader will need to have it's picture taken for an ID. Jim

Thanks Jim I dont have a shifter on the tractor just a lever on the right side for forward and reverse and a lever on the left that seems to be a (high low not sure about that ) The tractor dosnt seem to go very fast and I thoght I need to do somthing to make it go faster . The loader has a label on it brusg hog

I have a 666 Hydro, about the same thing. If its a hydro, It Has small pedal where the clutch should be (called the "foot and inch" pedal) a lever on the left (Called the SR lever) that is forward and reverse and a high and low range lever on the right. should do about 7 mph max in low and about 18+ in high. Low is forward, high back. Important use notes: use the pedal conservitavly, if is just a dump valve and starves the hydro unit.( you can move the left lever any time, under load while in motion to ajust your ground speed, I only use mine when starting the tractor.) also keep the RPMs up under use you need to keep the hydraulic preassure up in the hydro unit for long life. change the hydro filter yearly.

Looking at more of what you have said, it could be a gear. If it still has paint, and it's a hydro, it will say hydro on the front of the hood above the 656. A gear drive has the tourque amplifyer (TA) on the left (low back high forward) and the standard 5 + rev on the right. In between rev and first you should be able to move the lever right in nuteral to get to the other gear combinations.

I think it is a gear drive. The lever on the right should have multiple positions like a regular manual transmission. If it is worn it will feel loose and very imprecise. It will have a two speed system on the left (use it rapidly from slow to fast or fast to slow do not ease it in at all it is a switch, not to be feathered. It is also not used with the clutch, it is internal clutches that do the shifting It is a Torque amplifier and reduces the speed about 30% in the rear position. Read up on them in the Archives.
Worn shifters can be repaired with new roll pins, new links, and a book. Jim

The Foot-N-Inch valve controls the maximum system operating pressure. As oil bypasses in the valve the high pressure relief valves in the hydro unit are allowed to open. As long as the charge pump system is working properly nothing will starve for oil when the pedal is depressed. Unlike a manual clutch, feathering the Foot-N-Inch valve for extended periods of time will not harm the system.
