Take better care of my tractors

Do any of you take better care of your tractors than the family vehicles. I checked the milege on the wife's Ford Edge, it is about 3,000 over the needed oil change, my ford F150 is about 2,000 over. If anything on my tractors I change the oil under the hours for a oil change. Looks like I am going to do a couple oil changes today. stan

I have a friend who keeps track of his oil changes and other car maintenance in his garage as follows:
He has a board that is erasable (uses broad tipped pens) and marks all of the data on that, so that it is easily seen as a reminder. Works well for him. That is, until some prankster comes in and erases all of his data!!
You could do that or something similar.

We cary a note book ledger with all the information/dated/parts changes/maintance with the units. Keeps us informed when all the necessary items need attention. Good to have a record of the work .The glove box holds it real well .Why they call it a glove box is way beyond me.Gets cramed with other stuff and no room for gloves lol.

these tired OVAL shaped cars don't inspire a guy to do much more than change oil in them.. they all remind me of worn out sluts plying their trade .... My Tractors built during W W 2 on up thru the 1970s, are a Work of Art , that are easily maintained and will last a lifetime with Propercare, AND SO I DO , Same as my 45 year old combines , .. AS PROMISED ,I gave My son for his 25th birthday a treasured 69'XL500 White convertible , I STILL Got a Black 69' MERCURY MARQUIS convertible , owned 71 LTD convertible and a 76' THUNDERBIRD executive series, shoulda kept both even though previous owners must a washed them in saltwater , real nice car that T -BIRD . the last car that came close to warranting proper care was my 1990Crown Vic , modern cars all look the same , and drive the same ,DAM CAB FORWARD design Put your feet in a bucket that is murder to us guys that like to move our feet around on a trip ... had 94 Seville that was torture to sit in over a couple hours ,it did run like a VETTE until the ALUMheads warped tohelland that was the end of that car ..

For some reason I treat my tractors better than my pick up and wifes van. I think it has to do with the fact that tractors seem like they can go on forever, yet cars eventually become a money pit if you want to keep them going. Looking at my machinery actually makes me happy so I do more for them than regular vehicles. Most older tractors seem like they can rebuilt over and over again as long as you have the time to find the parts at a price you are willing pay. The other day I pulled a 36 ft packer with my 706 and enjoyed the job the whole time. Can't say the same about going to the store or work with my truck though. If you treat your tractor well it will last as long as you do.

I definitely do. I hate sinking too much time or money into a machine that's depreciating its value faster than I can count. Living on miles of gravel in salt country doesn't help the vehicle's case much either. On a calm night you can almost hear them rotting.

That's not a prankster, that's just a vandal. A true prankster would adjust the numbers so that he's changing the oil every 200 miles.

I've thought of cars as a money pit for years. They are never worth more than the day you buy them, so it starts on day 1.

I'm right there with you. My Harley and farm equipment get constant attention, on the other hand I bought a new ford fusion in march of 09. It gets a oil change roughly every 7k and its been washed once.

I take care of them equally well. With the care I give them I expect them to run when I turn the key, and if they don't its time to get rid of them.

I just dumped the last "new" Ford I ever plan on buying, after after 3 years of nonstop repairs and lousy dealership service it quit for no reason leaving my wife sitting on the side of the road for an hour before it started again - with no repair attempted. After coming home in one from the hospital and riding and driving them my entire life I've finally had it. Replaced it with a Hyundai Genesis. If that doesn't do it I'll check out one of those Chinese built GMs, the land almost most right sounds better than the land of wrong (Michigan).

Most people change their engine oil too often but it doesn't hurt anything if they do it right. New cars with computer monitoring go unbelievable distances between changes. My son's BMW notifies him when an oil change is needed. Usually around 17k. That's with synthetic oil (Mobil I is OK, among others) and a really good filter. OD showing 225k+ and I'm sure that the engine will last as long as the rest of the car. US Army confirmed same years ago but they use spectrum analysis.

I made up a cheat sheet that shows for each vehicle: filter number, size wrench needed, type of oil and quantity of oil.

I like most people on here enjoy the old cars but by last count the new generation cars are just getting started at 100K miles and as I remeber a car back in the 60s with 100K was pretty much trash. My first car was a 1955 chevy with 75K miles I had to put in a quart of oil about every 200 miles I paid $75 cash and baled all summer for it in retrospect I have a 1997 F150 with 157K miles and uses no oil between 3K oil changes and I push that girl pretty hard. BTW some of those oil changes strech into 5 or 6K.

As well as lubricating your engine the oil also removes contaminants so changing it more often than recommended surely can't hurt!
I seem to be doing pretty much the same as others, the tractor got a complete tune up and oil change.........my pickup on the other hand, before a 10 hour round trip to pick up a horse, I checked all the critical fluids and here is what I found:
The engine oil was low, probably due to the fact that it was 3000km overdue for an oil change. The coolant level was low, non existent in the expansion tank and low in the rad.
The tractor gets checked every 2nd or third time I get on it! Something I got from my Dad. Critical fluids were checked EVERY time he used his equipment. In his opinion it was very cheap insurance against an expensive break down.
