95 chevy truck

My 1995 chevy 1500 4X4 developed a huming or grinding noise in the front end. I changed the gear oil in the front differential and it had metalic particals in it. It looked like glitter in the oil. The noise did not change with fresh oil. My thought is a bad bearing. I was wondering what you guys think? Any ideas on how big a job it will be to fix?

If you're lucky, it's just a pinion bearing. Anybody put a new seal in there lately? I ask, because those pinion bearings often get ruined by someone installing a new seal and reintalling the pinion flange wrong.

You'll probably have to pull both front axles out, then pull out the carrier and ring gear, and then fix what's needed.

I have owned the truck for a year and a half and never changed the pinion seal. I'm thinking about just changing the differential if I can find a good one.

Cheaper to change out the front diff assembly.Used ones go for about $150 and pretty basic to swap out.

Have your gear ratio handy.RPO code (in glove box) is usually a GT4(3.73) or GU6(3.42).

Fill up with synthetic gear lube for extra protection.
