Son has a Ford 4830, 70 HP, 62 PTO HP, about 7500 lbs with loaded tires. He has an opportunity to buy a 12 foot disk with hydraulic cylinder for 250 bucks but we are worried that he will do a lot of spinning and perhaps it's too big. It needs some work (tires, bearings, probably a cylinder overhaul or replacement). It's a Bush Hog brand with 22 inch blades. Land is a lot of clay, but some sand in places.
What's your opinions?
 
Chopping up bean stubble or cornstalks in fall, that will be a perfect match, tractor will breeze along.

In spring, little damp yet, in plowed dirt, that will pull pretty hard, but will work most of the time.

Nature of a disk. Depends how you plan to use it. That should be about a good match most of the time.

you should consider some duals for the back wheels on the tractor. they make a big difference on traction and flotation on plowed ground.
the price on the disk sounds like a bargain even if it needs a little attention.
 
My dad bought a 12 foot Bush Hog disc in the 1970s. Didn't matter how it was set but it pulled about as hard as our 18 foot model of another brand.

Built heavy duty and bulletproof but pulled hard. Just my opinion.
 

We pulled a 14 footer with a 65 horse JD 3020 but had to dual up the rear tires in plowed ground. If the Ford has front wheel assist, it should be no problem.
 
Thanks for the input. He listened and is getting it this weekend. It will be some time before it's up and running but we're looking forward to tryin' it out. Ground on land he farms has a good amount of clay (not like you guys' loam in the midwest) and he won't be doing much on "plowed" ground so it should be fine.
