Well I sold some hay .It was 2nd cutting Alfalfa.Anyways I guess it had a few bales that had some mold in them.We try not to turn the Alfalfa because it just knocks the leaves off.So for you guys that sell hay.Do you replace the bad bales with new ones?Do you expect a certain percent of bad ones. Not in the habit of selling bad hay.Bales not moldy all the way thru just spotty. So 3/4 of bale was good.We all know everyonce in awhile your going to pickup a wet spot or two.Always fair about hay and willing to make things right, but you can use the over 3/4 of the bale right?Seems to me both sides could be reasonable right.Just looking for some thoughts on this. Hay in picture is not the hay in question.

How did you represent it when selling? If you sold "good" hay then your question is answered.
If you sold "as is" your question is answered as well.

If I bought hay from you that you said was "good" hay, I'd expect it NOT to have mold in it. True, 3/4's of the bale was probably still good, but that 1/4's worth "might" have caused me problems. I probably wouldn't say much about it. Then again, I probably wouldn't buy any more hay from you either. I feel your pain cause I sell hay too. Unfortunately, the customer is always right.

You won't lose much (and probably won't lose a customer) if you tell them to bring back the bad bales, and you'll replace them with good. Then sell the bad bales to a local cattleman at a discount.

How you handle it kind of depends on what you represented about the hay when sold, and how badly you want to keep the customer.

I sell mine money back guarantee. And also guaranteed to have some mold in it. I tell them that it's not a factory. Its not Montana where they just turn the water off to dry it. It's out doors in New England. But I do tell them that if they find more mold than they think is right that I will refund or replace whichever they want. In twenty three years I think that I have picked up maybe a dozen bales and adjusted the price on maybe 80. I have also had customers tell me that they had some that they fed out right away. And I have told customers a few times that they should watch out for a few heavy ones and put them aside. My customers for the most part appreciate having to pay only $5.00-$7.00/ bale so they are usually good about it. If someone is hard to get along with I get short on hay the next season.

I agree with the "bring back what you think is bad
and we'll swap for good." The ones that come back
with a small percentage of bales are likely
justified in their assessment, and deserve the swap.
Those that are just wanting to fuss are not going to
go through the time and effort to load them up and
come back to you. Sounds like your best bet
situation.
