rear main leaking.....

Hey folks,
the rear main just developed a leak in the last few weeks on my tractor (3cyl 1.8 liter D-111 diesel ).

I don't have the time, tools, or knowhow to replace it and don't want to have someone else do it without just redoing the whole motor while it's out (money is a little tight and can't do without the tractor this time of year for more than a day or two). What's the best thing to pour in to stop the leak?

Thanks, Dave

The tractor will need to be split but I see no need to overhaul the engine if there are no other issues with it. They should be able to put a new seal in it in a day. Might have them look at the clutch and throw out bearing while there in there though.

Time to engage those people skills and find out what the guys down at the motor pool need that they can't get and get it for them. But, seriously it isn't that big a job. The only special tool you might need is a floor jack but you should be able to borrow one. You shouldn't have to get into the motor.

I agree, bite the bullet and take it to town, or if you know someone who works on tractors, and you have a warm dry place to work, maybe you can talk them into doing it and you help and learn. Remember it won't take very long to leak $100. Evidentially you will get oil on your clutch and you don't want that. What kind of tractor is this anyway? Vic

German made Farmall. It's not pouring, but there is a few drops on the floor overnight. Can't have it done anytime soon just want to try to stop it for now. Kid in town is real good and has everything but has his garage full and won't have time til spring.
