Starter won't crank over 3cyl Fiat Diesel

Hi,

I have an Agripower which has a 2 year old starter in it. I brang the starter in and it tests fine. I put both new cables on and have tried 3 diff batteries. End result is the same...it turns over about 1 revolution and stops. I can usually get it started in the summer but it"s not easy.(jumper cables ect)
Something hanging up maybe? I can turn it over by hand using the fan maybe 1/2 revolution and then it gets hard(compression stroke??) and at the same time I can hear like a dry sounding noise from the injection pump and that would be 1 revolution. Any ideas?

the pump turns at 1/2 engine speed,1/2 rev on the engine would be 1/4 at the pump. you could havs a bad main bearing, rod bearing or fluid in the combustion chamber. could be one of many things.

Three items.
Purchase a starter draw meter, cheap at the auto store, they are pushed up against the battery cable and read to 600 amps. This meter will tell you if the tractor is getting enough current. Probably should draw about 350 to 400 amps cold. If it pegs the meter, the starter armature is dragging on the field poles (worn bushings) or shorted internally, or the engine is not turning easily. Does the engine run well when started (pull started or jumped)? If so I suspect the starter needs bushings. Bench testing is 20% effective in diagnosing a starter, as it has totally different side loads on the bearings.
The cables also need to be at least 0 gauge. Anything smaller like automotive cables will be a show stopper. Best of luck, Jim

It runs good when it's started besides alot of blue smoke. Someone said might be the hyd pump? I know the pump works so it's not like it's locked up. Stumped...

I would buy a amp meter but I'm sure it would peg the gauge. Tractor runs good when you can get it started. I've had the started tested twice now, I know it's just a bench test(not under load) but as you can imagine it's not easy getting parts for this tractor. Both of the cables are new 0 or 1 gauge, connections clean and tight. With a voltmeter on the battery I get 7-8 volts when trying to crank it and 11.5-12 volts cranking the starter out of the tractor(no load)

I would bet that if you take it apart it will show that the armature is dragging on the field laminations/core. Bushings will be readily available or easily made from bushing stock. Jim

Well I brang it back to the starter shop and they tested it and again he said the same. No problems here. So I demanded he take it apart and take a look, somehow water got into the brushes at one time and were sticking and one brush spring was broke. $95 later she cranks over like a dream.
