F250 Starter

I bought a 2000 F250 a while back with the gas Triton engine.

Every now and then the starter won't engage the flywheel and I have to try it a couple times.

Is that most likely the starter getting sticky and/or the solenoid getting weak?? Or is it likely the flywheel ring gear is getting a worn spot on it??

Thanks for any comments,
Howard

More than likely it is a weak solenoid/starter. if continuous problem versus occasional then I would say bad spot on ring gear. Either way you will know for sure if you pull the starter off.

sounds like a bad bendix drive to me that'll cause a bad spot in ring gear if it isnt fixed pronto.

check all the cables and connections , not just for 12v , but for load (amps) . had an exploxer , every so often would click then start , turns out the main cable to starter from battery had corroded inside the post connector at the battery ,cut the wires and soldered on a new one never replaced the starter had that for 205k mi. my current 98-150 has had the cable terminal at the starter rust/corrode off twice 281k on this

Disassemble, clean, grease, and reassemble. Or take it to a reputable shop. I have a good one here in town that charges extremely fair rates. ProLine if you are anywhere near Fairmont, WV.

If the starter is turning look for oil on the drive. If the starter dosent turn there is a 1/4 in push on terminal that corrodes from salt .These starter are easy to repair if you find a good parts supplier.NAPA quoted 40 bucks for a brush rigging.I had one mailed in for 16.50 postage included. You can get new starters for 85 bucks.Brake cleaner will clean the oil off the drive.
