Procrastination.....

Gotta quit that sometime. Starter has been acting up on my tractor (sol not kicking in) for a long time. Had a replacement given to me several months ago that I cleaned and looked over (everything tight and brushes almost new in length). Bench tested good. FF to yesterday @20 degrees and starter just wouldn't kick in. Been putting the swap off because I figured if I ran into problems I'd be stuck. Stuck anyway with the swap starter STILL on the floorboard and only a 6 inch crescent wrench and a screwdriver. 25 minutes later, tractor starts like a dream. Only thing is it sounds like an old chrysler starter (best explanation) like metal to metal or a rusty hinge somewhere. Think that's just a noise it's gonna make? when taking the starter apart for checking/cleaning, there was no rubbing or resistance.

thanks, Dave

Dave;

Did you check the tooth count on the starter drive?

Some starters, like Chevys need to have shims adjusted.

Gene

same number of teeth and everything looks the same. There was no shims on the one I took off and the starter came off the same tractor as mine just a couple months difference on production date. This is a 46 year old German made Farmall. Doesn't have a chattering sound just that rubbing sound.

Or am I misunderstanding you?

Dave

is the starter a gear reduction starter [ like older chrysler]? is so thats what it will sound like, if not, did you look at the ring gear on the flywheel when you had the starter off? it and the old starter will have developed a wear pattern on each other the replacement will have a slightly different wear pattern, that will also make it sound strange until they wear on each other a bit, as long as nothing is binding up id just drive it for awhile and see what happens

I did almost the EXACT same thing this morning,but it turned out different. The starter on my Oliver 77 had been acting up for a week. I'd have to hit the button a few times to get it to do any more than roll about half a turn. I had to hit it twice in the toolshed this morning,but it started. I got it out in the silo and shut it off while I loaded the cart. I went to start it and it wouldn't roll for anything.
I went in and took the starter off the 66,then stood out in the cold and changed it. It STILL wouldn't roll! I got the truck and jumper cables. It whirled right over but didn't start. I let off,pushed the choke in and tried it again. WOULDN'T ROLL! Kept fooling with the cables til it finally spun like crazy and started.
Miserable thing! It's sitting in front of the shop with the charger on it now. Either a weak or bad battery I guess.

You "fooled" with the cables " and it spun over like crazy. And then you deduce that you have a bad battery or weak battery?

What's the question? I kept wiggling them on the truck and tractor. The way it had been acting all week,it had me believing that the brushes were bad in the starter.

CRAP! Guess I was right the first time. I went out and put the 77 starter on the 66 and it won't even click.

LOL--- That's why they don't send donkeys to public schools --- No one likes a Smart A$$
