OT 2005 Chevy Duramax

A friend has a 2005 Chevy Duramax and he is having some coolant issues. He has had to add coolant a few times over the last couple of weeks. His hose is being sucked flat when parked. He said his temp climbs to 210 when driving highway speed but drops to 190 or so when sitting in traffic. He has not noticed any coolant leaks nor does the exhaust smell like coolant.
Any ideas what could be going on? I was kind of thinking that there might be air in the system somewhere.

The cap on the coolant tank is bad, that causes the hose to suck flat. He may want to pull the plastic cover off of the core support and make sure there is not a bunch of junk stuck between the intercooler and radiator, or any of the other coolers for that matter. I've seen lots of farm trucks with crap packed in front of the radiator. Junk stuck there will cause heating at high speeds and eventually head gasket falure.
