8hp Briggs float setting

Would a low float bowl level (due to a misadjusted float) cause an engine to run for 3 minutes perfectly then die? Or is this a symptom of a bad spark plug? If I wait a minute, it will start perfectly and run for three more minutes. I can keep it alive (sorta) with the choke, but the engine loads up badly. It will not run right until it has been shut down for a minute or so.

Been about everywhere on this generator and apparently I am not done yet. The magnet idea to contain the rust is working quite well.

Maybe I just need to change the fuel filter...

Back in a minute!

When it dies what are you losing? Spark, fuel or compression? Check for spark, is the fuel still flowing to the carb. Is there compression? Does it pull over and feel like there is compression?

Still has compression, not sure about the spark, but I can keep it running with the choke. I changed the fuel filter and did not help. I recent attempted to lower float level due to an overflow problem. Could I have lowered it to much? It is confusing due to how well it runs prior to dying.

dirty fuel filter or sticking needle valve attached to float.

What carb is on it? maybe I can find the proper float setting.

Could be the float is too low, but I would expect it to die slowly in that case. Sure you don't have some crud in the fuel line itself restricting fuel flow to the carb? Could the fuel cap vent be plugged? Have you tried to disconnect the fuel line from the carb and see if you get a steady flow of fuel?

I had a similar problem in an OLD 8 HP Briggs. I traced it to the ignition. Turned out to be the coil. When the engine warmed up, it would die. Started good after about 15 minutes of rest, but would die again in 4 minutes.

If that carburetor has a main jet adjusting sc/ew you may to open that as that will enrich the fuel mixture. Hal
