Happy New Year, Still working on getting our gas 3010 running, have compression, spark, new fuel, new battery but cranks slow... also noticed the direction of the fan is turning counter-clockwise; do these engines run counter-clockwise? I removed the starter and had it tested and it seemed slow to them and drawing fluctuating amps.
Thanks,
Joe

Is this part of the other thread,Where the cure to hard cranking was to either turn the steering wheel to bleed off hydraulic pressure,or buy the super duper starter?I don't recall what starter it was though!

not sure which way the fan turns but the dist
turns ccw on my 2010/1010 bought the 1010 not
running, had new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, points, batt, ignswitch and resistor. wires were in cap bassackwards

Check the condition of your battery cables.

The JD new generation gas engines come with the pathetically weak Delco 10 MT starter.
Cranking is very slow and weak, the starters are short lived because they have to work so hard to turn the engine and hydraulic pump.
The 10MT heavy duty is a little better, but not much.
The real fix is to install a Delco 20 MT starter.
It is a direct replacement and has twice the power of the 10 MT series. Great cranking speed under almost any conditions and so underworked that it will last a very long time.
After 20 years of poor cranking and a half dozen worn out. burned up 10 series starters, I converted my 4020 gas to the 20 MT starter.
Gives it the starting power it should have had from new.

I was going to remove the bolts to the front hydraulic pump at the fly wheel; but when I was checking the generator and water pump for resistance it seemed that the engine and pump turned by hand using the fan belt, relatively easy. I do not recall any engines that I have delt with running counter-clockwise. This is cranking c-clockwise.
Thanks,
Joe

The hydraulic pump will turn easy for about the first 1/2 turn until it starts to build pressure. From that moment on, system pressure very quickly goes to 2000 + psi and the hyd pump takes several HP to turn.

Why is it that those 3010s look like they're turning the wrong way? I had the hood off mine one time and had to use it for a few minutes and didn't have time to put it back on. That thing JUST didn't look right to me! I'd have sworn it was turning the wrong way. An illusion on THOSE tractors for some reason.

The engine runs clockwise.

Stand in front of the tractor looking to the fan. From that position the fan should turn clockwise. For the starter to turn the engine in the wrong direction, the starter drive and armature would have to be for CCW starter. Looking from the drive end of your starter it needs to turn clockwise.

If you keep turning the steering wheel back and forth while cranking it will crank a lot faster and keep it up for a bit after the engine fires up to keep it running.

Looking at the engine from the front, the engine and fan rotates cloclwise.
Looking at it from the rear, it will turn counter clockwise.
check which way the fan blades are pitched to see if it would pull air through the radiator when spinning CCW as seen from the rear of the engine.

(quoted from post at 02:13:14 01/01/11) Looking at the engine from the front, the engine and fan rotates cloclwise.
Looking at it from the rear, it will turn counter clockwise.

Jon,
Are you quite sure you're not stating it backwards?

I was thinking looking from flywheel 3010 engine turned CW.

Jim, I think I am right this time, CW looking at the front of the engine, CCW looking at the flywheel end.
Only been wrong a couple million times in my life, but I don't think this is one of them. LOL :)
