My 89 f350,3 speed, automatic tranny seems to be stuck in first gear.I recall back in the day, auto trannys had a vacuum line going to,I think a modulator? If the line or the modulator failed the tranny wouldnt shift.Does anyone know if this could be the case with my model? Its not on the road anymore, just use it for a field and plow truck.Havent crawled under or anything yet.Has plenty of fluid in it.Hoping I could get a cheap fix out of it,if not ,oh well then, guess Ill have a one gear truck.

Thanks
Stan

I cant crawl under it right now,but the sticker in the drivers side door jamb says, trans=K,and then it says axel=C-5

I think its a C-5

Thanks
Stan

Yes, the C6 has a vacuum modulator, but it doesn't do much when the trans is in 1st or 2nd. It senses vacuum and adjusts automatic shift points when you've got it in 3rd/Drive.

My vacuum line rusted off twice on my 85 diesel F250 with a C6. Just made it shift real late when in 3rd, but I could still shift it manually - using 1st and 2nd.

"K" means a C6 trans. The C5 is probably the code for your spring-package. MY F250 has C9 springs.

I just looked at my codes again on my F250. C9 is the axle package, not the springs.

On my F250 . .

K is the code for the C6 trans
C9 is for the axles with 3.5 ratio
9K is the spring package

Just so you know a C5 is the newer version of the C4. A light duty transmission for passenger cars and light duty pickups (Think Fairmont and F100).

Ye it has the modulator valve, to me that is what it sounds like your prob is, pull the vacum hose off of it and if tranny fluid is present than that is what the prob is.... Bob
