Back to my 4:45 am feed check schedule. I am actually kinda glad. It is nice to have a month with no birds but for some reason I seem more at peace when I have my routine back to normal. Hoping for a anther good production year!

Good luck with the new birds. Gettin' up at 4:45 to take care of the birds will also allow you to check on those cows as calving season starts. I'll be outside at that time too! I usually take the 4:30 a.m check time, and then just do chores and get ready for work.

Most folks feed their beef cows in the morning...and they calve overnight. Ever heard the theory of feeding them in the evening, and they calve in daylight?

I used to feed mine both morning and night- guess it confused them, because the only thing they made sure of regarding calving timing was to look around and make sure I wasn't there.

Yes, and actually we do feed at night. Usually between 4:30 and 5 p.m. And with 40+ cows calving, we usually have less than 10 calves born during the overnight hours. However, we will not let the cows go more than 4 hours at a time without them being checked on. We start February 1st and usually go through April with 4 hour checks, 24 hours a day. Kind of tired by May, but if one calf is saved it is worth it.

I used to feed my close ewes their grain at 10 PM just before leaving for work. The wife would check about 3 most nights.I usually got home just before 8 AM. Almost all of the lambs were born between 8 and 11 AM.

what type of bull do you have, with 50 cows you should be finished in 6 weeks other than a few straglers. My dad has 150 cows, when they start he'll have as many as 11 in one day.First 3 weeks and there might be 20 left.He does run alot of bulls.6-8 and there not in the same pen. They all get 3 weeks alone with a herd then he throws in the best proven 2 bulls and the rest get taken out till next year. The best thing he found was feed the half million vitamins a week before breeding and keep it up for 2-3 weeks.Feeds at 3-4 pm,most born by 10 pm.
