Cattle Hauling Insurance

I will be hauling my own cattle and also possibly hauling cattle for my girlfriends dad pretty regularly. Granted these arent very long runs I still want to have myself covered. I was going to go to farm bureau and ask but I dont know what type of insurance to ask for or what kind of rate is fair. Could you guys shed any light on this? Thank You

Sorry I have a Ford F 350 with a 24 ft gooseneck brand cattle trailer. Trailer just had new metal and wood put in the floor by me and all new brakes if it matters.

The insurance that you carry on your truck should cover the truck, trailer, and cargo upto a said amount as long as you are hauling your cattle, but if hauling someone elses cattle, then it is considered being commerical and will not cover. I would suggest going to ins...agent and ask for a 72hour wavier when you think you are going to haul cattle. State Farm will do that. BTDT
Good Luck and be careful

Farm Bureau ins. covers mine on my farm policy as long as I'm just hauling my own. I beleive I had a rider put on years ago. I have hauled for friends but I tell them in advance if something happens they belong to me as far as farm bueau is concerned. I did break a axle right at the wheel and the wheel hit a car behind me a few years ago. It only dented the bumper on the car. They had a wreaker there in about a half hour and got the trailer home along with the cattle on board. Everything was covered minus the trailer repair and never heard anymore about it. I just have a 16ft. bumper pull with 3/4 ton truck. I was glad I was covered.

Two or three issues, as far as your own cargo its easy, cut and dried with KFB. I'd go for maximum limits, 300/500, with an additional, at least, 1M umbrella liability rider. I carry more than that. I'm not sure if they look at occassional hauling of cattle as commercial or not. If they call it commerical they can write you an inland marine rider to cover the commercial aspects. Thats what I had to get for dozer, skid loader, and dump truck work. Its funny how they break it up and I dont remember all the ins and outs. Custom work has all kinds of ins and outs. Also, your insurance on your truck and trailer will cover your truck and trailer, and your liability to others. It doesnt cover the value of the contents (cattle) unless you add it specifically.

The other issue is if you cross state lines you will need a DOT medical card at least, and probably in state too if your trailer and trailer cargo weight is over 10,000 pounds. That reminds me, mine expired back in November.

Regardless, its not worth saving a few bucks being under insured, or not insured for the right risks. I've been on both sides of the aisle in civil litigation and its not fun in either chair. The only comfort I ever found in defending a civil suit was knowing that the insurance company had hired the best legal team money could buy.

If you are going to haul anything for someone else, even the F-I-L, you become commercial. Insurance is the LEAST of your worries after what you have to do to keep the DOT happy!

I was told by an insurance agent as long as I hualed my own cattle I did not have to have commercial insurance . If I hualed cattle from someone elses place When they got in the trailer they were mine until unloaded then they could be the original owners again just not to advertise it and make sure the original owner knew how it worked.

was told here that standard ins. would only cover my truck and not anything hooked to it, would cover anything i hit but not he trailer or load
