Pelee Island!

Bendee:

You asked about Pelee Island earlier, well I live in the neighbourhood and Gramps lives a little further down along the "BUMP" left by the last glacier.

Gramp's farm is littered by that glacial rubble, aka rocks!

Pelee Island does have a great deal of history, I understand that the USA had to give it up after the war of 1812, in the "Treaty of Ghent"

Pelee Island is Canada's most southernly point where they grow grapes, ideal for growing seed corn varities because of the natural isolation.

You left out Pelee Island wines and the winery. It is a great summertime destination to enjoy the beach, the outdoors and the winery, the boat tour to the island, biking the bike routes and enjoying the scenery.Pelee Island has the same latitude as California

I thought if I start something, I can let others finish it or should I say, add to the topic!

You are absolutely correct, I have taken my bicycle over and cycled the island, on the weekends you can do a run trip on the Ferry, enjoying the wonderful atmosphere on the open decks!

Toured the Pelee Island Winery different times in Kingsville!

Have you ever stood at Pelee Point? It is pretty mushy right at the point where it feels like quicksand. That is the first time I have ever seen topless female bathers. It is a good place to relax and watch the natives. I recommend it to all the tractor lovers.

Vern:

What kind of birds were you watching on the beach?

I hope you did not use your camera to take pictures, if you did, maybe you should post them!

What makes me think, your engine was really purring!

OK, educate this ol' redneck Florida boy (transplanted from the Midwest 33 years ago) about Pelee Island.

We spend two or three months in a motor home each summer, and have been to B.C. 4 times in the last ten years. Only once to the Maritimes, back in 2001.

We stayed in Amherst, NS for a week, and toured Cspe Breton Island, and they were beautiful, and we met some wonderful people!! One of the best was the owner of a pizza parlor in Amherst, where we loved the seafood pizza.

We're thinking about going that direction again this summer, and would like to see some different territory. We love getting off the Interstate highways and like to see "local" things along the way.

Stan:

If you are serious about this, you will NOT be disappointed. There is so much to see on the North Shore of Lake Erie, with a very scenic road following the Lake from Detroit to Niagara Falls.

I-75 North to Detroit, cross into Canada at Windsor, Ontario and watch for #3 Hwy to Leamington.

Make sure you recognize the speed limit in kilometers per hour, which is usually 80km/50 mph on the secondary highways.

Now if you are in this area around wheat harvest, you can help Gramps harvest his wheat. This will show the rest, he really does exist and has a tractor!

Now if you miss the exit in Detroit, I-75 will take you to Port Huron, cross into Canada via Sarnia (Lambton County).

Beautiful drive along the St. Clair River, visit Petrolia, Ontario to see the old working oil rigs. The Canadain side of the river is an excellent side to view the St. Clair River and see the ships passing.

Best thing used to be the smelt runs in April. Saw people taking 40 oil drums full out of there. Most people took at least a 30 gallon can full, including ourselves. When you get 50 or 60 coleman lanterns going on the shore at night in 60 degree water, that is a sight. Park used to run special trains for fisherman. Remote and beautiful. Really miss the smelt. Don't know why they stopped running. Used to clean as many as I could in 4 hours and give the rest away. Dave

Sort of, 42 degrees north is actually the border between CA & OR.... it's a little north of wine country.

I had to look that up because I'm not that far from Pelee Island and I never considered NW Ohio and California to have the same climate.

The entire Long Point, Leamington and Niagra area is fine tender fruit country. That is where the developers haven't paved the few acres it consists of.

California is tempered by the Pacific Ocean.
I'm even pretty sure that the coast of northern California is even semi-tropical.

Isn't the water on the California coast cold
North Pacific water on it's way south from Alaska?
55F to 68F water is well above freezing but warm
doesn't come to mind. The Great Lakes are warmer
than that 2-3 months of the year.

I took a train to Seattle one time and saw a palm tree in front of a house.
Found out later that some types of palm trees can survive along the Pacific coast as far north as Vancouver, BC.

Even though the cold Pacific Ocean currents can cause fog and a fairly cool climate, especially at night, it also keeps the temperatures more stable and less susceptable to freezing. Therefore, tender vegetation can grow farther north along the coast than would normally be thought at that latitude.

The Great Lakes may be warmer 2 or 3 months out of the year than the Pacific along the California coast, but in the winter the Pacific is what keeps the climate on the west coast more on an even keel. It also keeps it cooler in the summer.
