I have a Kubota 2550 4 wheel drive. When depressing the clutch and the tractor running, the PTO will not go into gear. If I shut the tractor off, depress the clutch the pto will slide into gear nicely. I then start the tractor and the pto shaft is engaged. Any idea why it won"t engage when running???

Clutch pedal has to be pushed all the way to the stop to shift PTO I think. Pushing pedal half way will stop trans. while PTO continous to run. Armand

Though not familiar with the Kubota 2550, many tractors have a so-called "live PTO" system using a double clutch system.

If your tractor is so equipped, a sticking or damaged PTO clutch will cause the symptoms that you describe.

Armand has it right, at least that is the way my 2550DT works. It has a dual stage clutch. Half way down to stop the transmission, and all the way down to stop the pto, (when engaged). Hope this helps. NorminN.B.

It helps Norman NB. but pushing the clutch all the way in stops it but if its not engaged and I depress the clutch with the tractor running It wont go into gear. I think my pto clutch might be damaged

I'd try adjusting the clutch rod first- I've had the same situation. If its out of adjustment, there is enough drag on the disc that it won't stop so you can shift into PTO (unless you jam it in, which of course isn't recommended). But if its already in gear(and especially if you have an implement attached), there's enough drag in the pto components/ implement to make it stop.

Most clutches should have about an inch of "free play" in the pedal- ie, you can feel it start dis-engaging when pedal travels down about an inch. If you have more free play than that, try adjusting it. If its already at that point, you need to "adjust" the thickness of the clutch discs by splitting the tractor and replacing them.

If you haven't used the power take off in a while the cluch disk might be stuck to the pressure plate. I've had that happen once. I just put a brush cutter on, went to a slightly down hill with heavy cutting and pushed the cluch in all the way and eased in with the brake and it will come lose.
