My dad was a world war II veteran, purple heart reciepent. Served in Patton's Army. Was in Normandy and Northern and Southern France Campaigns. I was looking through some of his old military records and pictures and found he took his training in Pine Camp, NY in about 1941. I was just wondering if anyone knows where this is or does it still exist? Thanks for any info.

I may be wrong but I think that Pine Camp eventually became Camp Drum, then Fort Drum.

I'm curious to hear what anyone else may add.

Welding man: jokers is correct. Pine Camp is what's now known as Fort Drum, home to the 10th Mountain Division and located just outside Watertown, NY, about an hour and a half north of Syracuse.

Goggle Fort Drum NY----- Wikipedia,. It dates back to 1800s. According to this it was called Pine Plains, although there is a Pine Plains NY, 12567 Dutches county, down state, far from Fort Drum.

Pine Camp is now Fort Drum, home of the outstanding 10th Mtn.Div. Just a short distance from Watertown,N.Y.

The others are correct- Pine Camp became Camp Drum, then Fort Drum - in Jefferson County NY. Home of the 10th Mountain Division. I dont beleive it was ever called Pine Plains. My Grandfather worked ther as a civilian employee in the 1930's and 40's when it was called Pine Camp , and also had a great uncle retire from there in the 1970's.

I grew up about 5 miles from there back in the '50s and '60s. The flares lit up the night sky and the artillery rattled our windows all summer long. Pine Camp was established as a training camp during WWI. It was expanded to 107,000 acres and renamed Camp Drum during WWII. My grandfather helped build the barracks at that time. My father bought a Fordson tractor at the auction of one of the farms that was taken for the expansion.

welding man,
God Bless your dad for all he did for this country!
I'm an engineer that works on the Carthage and Indian River schools that are either side of Fort Drum. I know that the kids in these schools can't be any prouder of their moms and dads, men and women serving around the world, right down to the littlest kids in the elementary schools

Dad had a pretty tough time of it I think. He went in in April 1941 and didn't get out until Jan 1946. He was wounded in action near the end of the war and spent some time in the VA hospital in Richmond Va. after the war was over.He has been dead for several years now, I was just looking through some of his old papers and came across the old pictures of Pine Camp Thanks for all the responses.

"The Greatest Generation!" We are losin" "em fast! My Grandfather was from Western, NY fought with Patton in N. Africa and Italy...trained mostly in Texas and Az.
