Corn Maze - GPS needed or not?

Thinking of putting a maze in this yr. and most of the reading says you need GPS to cut the design.

I have a hand held device but not sure how to map it out to the field. Looking at having to stake it out as I can"t figure out how to create a JPG and apply it to the GPS.

Any ideas?

Neighbor guy cuts his when the corn is about boot top high. Not sure why a GPS would be needed?? You can see everything.

Kid pretty local to me started his own business cutting mazes. He does his parents' first I believe. Anyway the GPS is used to map the field and then he cuts the maze with a laptop and GPS on his riding mower. This allows him to get quite accurate and intricate designs. It is truly amazing what he can cut out and not run out of space etc.

There's a corn maze every year on the way to my land. The corn is all cut down in the fall. In the spring, they lay the maze out with everything cut down. I don't know if the corn just grows back or they plant new corn but I watched them lay it out in the spring with a rototiller on a garden tractor. It was about 5 ft. tall about a month and a half or 2 months later. Dave

As stated below the GPS is used to map the field and then guide your cutting when corn (sorgham) is about a foot tall. Permits greater complexity in the maze design. As it Baker Co. FL 150th anniversary I wanted to use the county seal with 1861-2011 numerals as part of the maze.

Using a grid with stakes and twine is labor intensive and adds cost. I just cant justify $5k for GPS and PC for a hobby. I will keep looking.
Thanks!

I am going to do a small one this year maybe 2 acres, more just for the kids to get to play with a "business" when selling their pumpkins.

My question? What is wrong with a good old fashioned maze? Everyone seems to want to make art...

Only reason I am going for the "Art" is it is county's 150th birthday. I wanted to use County Seal and numerals.

Looking to do this using grid pattern.
